Materials for the June 11 EGNC Meeting

Materials for the June 11 EGNC Meeting

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meets this Wednesday, June 11 at 7pm in the Corbin Senior Center (827 W Cleveland).

If you’ve been meaning to come to a neighborhood council meeting, make it this one. There’s not a ton on the agenda, so it’ll be short, but what is on the agenda consists of things like concerts, parties, and potlucks, so it’ll certainly be sweet. Anyone with an interest in Emerson-Garfield is welcome to attend.

SPD Ombudsman Tim Burns will be giving his annual report on police complaints (including, we suppose, the shooting at Maple/Grace), and Ben Covino of the Lands Council will be giving some advance warning to summertime fishermen and -women regarding river toxins in fish.

We’ll also be discussing a potentially larger role for Project Hope in the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market, the presentation of the Neighborhood Plan on June 12, the status of the Concert in the Park/Summer Parkways collaboration, and the neighborhood-wide August potluck in Emerson Park. Whether or not the EGNC will take a break from meeting in July will also be determined.

Help Sponsor E-G’s Concerts in the Park

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council (EGNC) is gearing up for its second annual Concert in the Park!

This year we’re joining up with Summer Parkways to create an all-out block party around Corbin Park on Friday, July 18 from 6 to 9pm. Sara Brown (of the Sara Brown Band) will be performing a duet from 6 to 8pm.

We’re looking for private and business sponsors who will join us in making our neighborhood come alive. At least $500 needs to be raised to help pay for the permit, insurance, band, and flyers.

All sponsors will have the opportunity to have their names — or business names — added to the Concert in the Park event posters. Those names will also be highlighted during the concert’s announcements.

If you’d like to be a sponsor for this summer’s concert, you can make a donation for any amount with a check made out to Eline Helm with the memo “Summer Concert”. Then send them to:

Eline Helm
1034 W. Cora Ave
Spokane, WA 99205

Or you can give Eline a call at (509) 847-9166 and she’ll come pick it up. If you’re paying with a personal check but want your business name mentioned, please make sure to include the name of your business. All funds need to be received no later than June 30.

You’ll receive an e-mail or a phone call to confirm receipt of your donation and to get additional info needed to advertise your business on our concert flyer.

Since funding has been slow in coming this year, the Concert in the Park series will be concentrating solely on the Summer Parkways co-event. If we receive enough donations, we’ll be able to expand the series to two concerts as planned — one in Emerson Park and one in Corbin Park every summer.

Trinity Cow Plop (June 7)

Trinity Cow Plop (June 7)

Trinity Catholic School (1306 W Montgomery) will be holding its 24th annual Cow Plop on Saturday, June 7 from 11am to 4pm.

What’s a cow plop? Well, it makes a bingo-like sport out of natural bovine deposits. They graze and poop as usual, and depending on where the poop lands, it can earn you a heck of a lot of money. The top prize is a respectable $3,100, and there are 50 more cash prizes to be won.

Trinity Cow Plop 2014

To keep everyone entertained while the cow does its business, there’s a street carnival with slides, an obstacle course, arts and crafts, games, and plenty of family fun. A raffle will be held for a two-hour GameTruck party as well as a family four-pack at Laser Quest. Plus there will be pizza from Pizza Rita and popcorn from Kettle Krazy Kettle Corn.

The event is open to everyone, not just Trinity students, and is a great way to help raise funds for a neighborhood school.

Tickets and info are available by calling (509) 327-9369 or by e-mailing tbauer@dioceseofspokane.org.

Trinity will also be selling bingo tickets for the Cow Plop at the season opener of the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market on Friday, June 6! Just $5 gets you a shot at one of those great cash prizes.

Korean Food Sale (May 17)

Korean Food Sale (May 17)

It’s time for another Korean Food Sale at Spokane Hope Christian Reformed Church (스포켄 소망교회). This month it’s happening on the third weekend — that is, this Saturday, May 17 — from 11am to 2pm at the usual place (806 W Knox; aka Knox Presbyterian).

Lots of popular favorites are on the menu this time: bulgogi (Korean BBQ), jeyook-bokeum (spicy pork), gimbap (sushi), bibim-bap (an all-in-one meal), kimchi fried rice and potstickers.

Plus they’re running a bonus deal this month. Order four meals and you’ll get a fifth one for free!

Korean Food Sale - May 2014

James Shin, Pastor of the Spokane Hope CRC, has pointed out that this is more than just buying a meal. It’s a fundraising event, and all proceeds from the sale of the food help fund Spokane Hope CRC. “Your support helps our church to continue the vision to be self-sustaining to begin becoming the church that pays back to the community,” he says.

Garfield Elementary Culture & Community Night, May 16

Garfield Elementary Culture & Community Night, May 16

Garfield Elementary is holding its seventh annual Culture & Community Night this Friday, May 16 from 6 to 8pm.

The event is like a mini Unity in the Community, with booths showcasing cultures from all over the world. There will be free snacks, bingo games, fun craft activities, exciting performers, art education (including learning how to write your name in Japanese) and lots more. Reverend Happy Watkins will also be returning this year to speak.

Culture and Community Night

And parents, there’s lots more than kids’ activities. The local C.O.P.S. Shop will be on hand to provide safety IDs for children.

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council will be tabling a booth there too. Volunteers will be on hand to talk to you about how to request free street trees in front of your house, how to get sidewalks repaired or replaced, our ambitious Neighborhood Planning effort, this year’s Concerts in the Park series, the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market and the role of the neighborhood council in improving the quality of life here in E-G.

If you have questions about the Culture & Community Night, call Dee Dee on (509) 324-2700.
