Vendor Lineup for 2014 Opening Market

Vendor Lineup for 2014 Opening Market

Below is the vendor lineup for the 2014 season opening of the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market on Friday, June 6.

Even though some full-season vendors — such as Jennifer Michelle Massage, who many people are looking forward to seeing again — will miss the opening date, this is a good preview of what’s to come during our market’s second year. During peak season (July and August) even more vendors are scheduled to take part.

The opening band will be Spokaloo, featuring E-G’s very own Bryant McKinley. We’ll also be honoring Claire Menzer and Karissa Orlob, the two winners of the market’s first-ever poster contest, on June 6.

Trinity Catholic School will have a table where they’ll be selling bingo tickets for their 24th annual Cow Plop, a fun neighborhood event with cash prizes that will take place the following day. The Main Market Co-op might also be there with an info table.

Last but not least, the central market booth will have a limited number of $20 dump passes for E-G residents in case they didn’t get a chance to offload everything during Spring Cleanup. To claim a pass, be sure to bring ID.

Piper Farms Looking for Help

Piper Farms Looking for Help

Piper Farms, one of the vendors at this year’s Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market, is looking for a reliable and diligent part-time person to help around their U-pick blueberry and raspberry farm located six miles north of the Spokane Valley Mall.

Days and hours are flexible. Most of the work will consist of helping with the weeding and picking berries at both farms. The work will continue through October.

If interested, call Cindy at (509) 951-4755 for more information.

Trinity Cow Plop (June 7)

Trinity Cow Plop (June 7)

Trinity Catholic School (1306 W Montgomery) will be holding its 24th annual Cow Plop on Saturday, June 7 from 11am to 4pm.

What’s a cow plop? Well, it makes a bingo-like sport out of natural bovine deposits. They graze and poop as usual, and depending on where the poop lands, it can earn you a heck of a lot of money. The top prize is a respectable $3,100, and there are 50 more cash prizes to be won.

To keep everyone entertained while the cow does its business, there’s a street carnival with slides, an obstacle course, arts and crafts, games, and plenty of family fun. A raffle will be held for a two-hour GameTruck party as well as a family four-pack at Laser Quest. Plus there will be pizza from Pizza Rita and popcorn from Kettle Krazy Kettle Corn.

The event is open to everyone, not just Trinity students, and is a great way to help raise funds for a neighborhood school.

Tickets and info are available by calling (509) 327-9369 or by e-mailing tbauer@dioceseofspokane.org.

Trinity will also be selling bingo tickets for the Cow Plop at the season opener of the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market on Friday, June 6! Just $5 gets you a shot at one of those great cash prizes.

Materials for the May 14 EGNC Meeting

Materials for the May 14 EGNC Meeting

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meets this Wednesday, May 14 at 7pm in the Corbin Senior Center (827 W Cleveland). We met hundreds of new folks at the Spring Cleanup this past weekend, and we hope to see many of you there!

On the subject of Spring Cleanup, we’ll be hearing a quick recap of the event, including participation, hiccups (like broken dumpster hinges and dumpsters that came back full), and just how much trash was collected. The numbers are pretty impressive.

There will be a trio of guest speakers, including representatives of the Riverfront Park Master Plan, who’ll be explaining what’s in store downtown and who’s going to pay for it, plus Alicia Powell of the Office of Neighborhood Services (on potential stormwater improvements here in E-G) and Dave Braun on behalf of Summer Parkways — which is returning to our neighborhood this year!

And, of course, we’ll hear our final Neighborhood Planning update, how the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market is shaping up, what’s in the works for this season’s Concerts in the Park, as well as some fun (no, really!) volunteer opportunities.

2014 Farmers’ Market Poster Contest Winners

2014 Farmers’ Market Poster Contest Winners

We’re pleased to announce Claire Menzer (of Audubon Elementary) and Karissa Orlob (of Garfield Elementary) as our two winners in the first-ever poster contest for the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market!

Their drawings will be featured on this year’s promotional materials for the market, such as posters and flyers. The two of them will also each be awarded $15 in market tokens at the opening market on Friday, June 6.

Claire and Karissa had some fierce competition from their schoolmates. Some entries had colorful and clever depictions of Garfield the cat surrounded by produce, and nearly all of the drawings took real pleasure in showcasing the wide range of fruit and vegetables that you’d expect to see from a farmers market — including some very exotic ones like mangoes.

Our sincere thanks to every student who took part! We hope that all the participants and their families will make it to the market this season so we can thank them in person.
