Pancakes ‘n’ More at Corbin (Apr 19)

The Corbin Senior Center (827 W Cleveland) will be holding its annual Pancakes ‘n’ More event on Saturday, April 19 from 7:30 to 10:30am. It will take place in the center’s Henderson Room.

What’s on the menu? Pancakes, sausage, eggs, orange juice and your choice of coffee or hot chocolate. And that’s all for just $7 per person. If you’re planning on attending the street-tree planting event in Emerson-Garfield on the same day, this would make a great stop beforehand.

This event helps raise funds for Lions Club Projects as well as the Corbin Senior Center. A Spokane Lions Club van will be on site doing health screenings.

This fair isn’t a small-scale event. The vendor booths generally wind through the whole first floor and lower level of the Corbin Senior Center, and they represent services and businesses from all fields: healthcare, real-estate, utilities, legal and financial planning, and lots more.

Though some of the offerings are naturally geared toward the Corbin Senior Center’s clientele, there’s useful information, fun activities and swag for the whole family.

STCU Contest: Nominate Your Favorite Nonprofit

STCU Contest: Nominate Your Favorite Nonprofit

You’ve got one day left to nominate your favorite local nonprofit as part of STCU’s Who Do You Love? contest. To do so, just fill out the simple form on this page or visit STCU’s Facebook page by tomorrow (February 20).

For those who are unfamiliar with the Who Do You Love? contest, STCU annually donates a total of $5,000 to be divided among the top three vote-getting nonprofits in our community. First, nonprofit organizations have to be nominated. The ten eligible organizations that receive the most nominations will then move to the voting round, which runs February 22 to 28 in 2014.

STCU - Who do you love? 2014

The winners will be announced by KREM-TV as soon as Monday, March 3. The victors will divvy the spoils as follows:

  • 1st place: $2500
  • 2nd place: $1500
  • 3rd place: $1000

We received word of this great opportunity from Spokane C.O.P.S., which would make an ideal candidate for nomination. Some other nonprofits deserving of nomination for their involvement with the neighborhood would include Project Hope, Catholic Charities, the West Central Community Center, the Women and Children’s Free Restaurant and the Emerson Community Garden.

Project Hope Meet & Greet (Feb 13)

Project Hope Meet & Greet (Feb 13)

Project Hope, our neighborhood partner in the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market, is hosting a meet and greet with James Kashork, the organization’s new executive director, on Thursday, February 13. It will start at 6pm at the Maxwell House Restaurant (1425 N. Ash).

James KashorkJames is a familiar face around Spokane, not least due to his involvement with a variety of faith-based organizations such as Spokane Urban Ministries and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. As the new full-time executive director for Project Hope, he’s already hard at work at his desk in the nonprofit’s new offices in Salem Lutheran Church, where will be helping to coordinate Project Hope’s existing activities as well as build the donor and volunteer base for anticipated future growth.

Part of that future growth involves closer ties with Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood and its at-risk youth. With Project Hope, these youth will find a productive and positive channel for their free time that includes gardening, lawn care, market sales and more.

The Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market was Project Hope’s first “official” collaboration with Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council, and this year will see an even closer collaboration between the two organizations. For example, Project Hope’s Riverfront Farms will sell vegetables grown by its youth participants at the EGFM.

If you’re interested in meeting James, finding out more about Project Hope, or supporting the organization through donations or volunteering, we encourage you to attend the February 13 meet and greet. You can also reach out to James via e-mail at james@projecthopespokane.org.

Vintage, Hearts & Flowers Charity Event, Aug 24

Vintage, Hearts & Flowers Charity Event, Aug 24

The annual North Monroe Vintage, Hearts & Flowers charity event to benefit the Women and Children’s Free Restaurant here in Emerson-Garfield will take place tomorrow (Saturday, August 24) at The Heart of Spokane (3017 N Monroe) [map] between noon and 5pm.

Vintage Hearts Poster 2013

The event is both a canned food drive and family-friendly shopping extravaganza. In addition to face painting for the kids and fundraising raffles, you can wander up and down North Monroe and visit the many individually owned retro, craft, and antique shops there like Cruz’n Back in Time or Bag Lady.

There are usually a few vintage cars and motorcycles on display, and you’ll be able to purchase a grilled hotdog or two across the street at the Hub Tavern in their outdoor lounge area. And don’t forget to stop in at Paint in My Hair to get a DIY project to go.

Drop off your donations of canned food at The Heart of Spokane, check out the unique shops on N. Monroe, and help benefit a fantastic nonprofit community service all at once!
