Tossed & Found Barn Sale, May 25

Tossed & Found Barn Sale, May 25

Tossed & Found is going to be holding its third annual Barn Sale on Saturday, May 25. This is the event where one of N. Monroe’s most popular vintage stores closes off its parking lot and opens up its barn. It will run from 9am until 5pm and will be held in the rear parking lot of the building [map].

BarnSale 3

For the past two years, the Barn Sale has been a cornucopia of all things distressed, vintage, antique, and retro. Some third-party vendors take part and offer their wares in addition to Tossed and Found’s ample selection of furniture, trinkets, books, signs, tools, gewgaws, knickknacks, and nostalgia items.

Oh, and please don’t park at Waffles Plus. They’ll get surly and will tow.

Emerson Community Garden Work Day, May 18

Emerson Community Garden Work Day, May 18

The Emerson Community Garden will be holding its second work day of the season this Saturday (May 18) from 1-4pm. The garden is located at 3209 N. Madison [map].

Emerson Community Garden work day, 2012

Here are some of the things they have planned:

  • Finish roto-tilling the corn bed
  • Prepare the raspberry bed for new starts
  • Build and paint signs to mark the rows of plants
  • Plant seeds and starts

A lot got done during the first work day of the season, and the EGC members are hoping this Saturday will be equally fun and productive.

If you’re interested in taking part in the work day and/or joining the Emerson Community Garden, show up on Saturday — or just call Paul or Sara Kimball on (509) 863-5133.

And in case you haven’t been by the garden recently, there’s a new sign. It looks fantastic!

Results of the 2013 Spring Cleanup

Results of the 2013 Spring Cleanup

“Garbage Czar” Karl Boldt reports that Emerson-Garfield had a great turnout at yesterday’s Spring Cleanup.

The event served about 170 residences, primarily from W Montgomery Ave northwards, and with pretty consistent representation from both the east and west of N Monroe. Karl estimates that 23 tons of refuse was collected along with two tons of clean green. The 20-yard metal recycling bin was also full by the time collection ended at 12:30pm.

The neighborhood had $6,000 in dump costs allocated to the event; overall between $4,600 and 5,000 of that money was used. Around 20 people have signed up for the large furniture pickup that will take place in June (more info on that is in the Spring Cleanup post linked above).

Karl will have more details on the results of the event at the upcoming neighborhood council meeting on Wednesday, May 8.

Thanks to Faith Bible Church for providing a location, and thanks to all the volunteers who helped in many different capacities!

Need Help Hauling on Spring Cleanup?

Need Help Hauling on Spring Cleanup?

If you can’t come to Spring Cleanup this Saturday (April 27), there’s a chance that Spring Cleanup could come to you!

A group of volunteers from North Central High School and Cub Scouts from Pack 151 are going to be doing on-site collection — which means they will come to your home and haul away the refuse that you’re unable to bring to the roll-off containers at Faith Bible Church.

If you or someone you know — a housebound or disabled neighbor, for example — is in need of on-site collection, please contact coordinator Karl Boldt at karl.boldt@gmail.com or (509) 325-3031 and schedule an on-site collection.

Keep in mind that the volunteers’ time and manpower is limited, though, so be sure to reserve a spot on the list by calling today.

Record Store Day, Apr 20

Record Store Day, Apr 20

RSD_2013_thumbA reminder that this Saturday, April 20 is Record Store Day.

RSD has been going since 2007 and has grown into a global event. It’s a chance to show some love to your local record store, where, unlike iTunes and other digital marketplaces, there’s usually some boffin in a faded band T-shirt on hand who knows where to source the complete discography of your favorite artist — including split 7-inches and tour-only EPs.

Here’s what the organizers say about the event itself:

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.

In honor of RSD, both major and indie labels tend to offer limited-editon pressings of new or classic albums. Warner Bros., for example, is issuing a deluxe edition of Built to Spill’s Live (2000) and Cream’s Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2005) in addition to RSD-only albums by Iron & Wine, The Flaming Lips, Teagan and Sara, Deftones, and more.

Why is this neighborhood news? Well, Emerson-Garfield has got a great record store on N. Monroe called 4000 Holes (video below) that’s officially taking part in RSD. The Bachelor Pad also sells records, and it’s just up the road from 4000 Holes.

Stop in, get some 180-gram vinyl and a few rare 7″ — and then pick up a turntable from one of the vintage shops if you don’t already have one. 4000 Holes will be featuring live music by Dead Man’s Pants and Gorilla & Rabbit.
