E-G Summer Potluck in Emerson Park (Aug 13)

The annual Emerson-Garfield Summer Potluck will take place in Emerson Park this Wednesday, August 13 starting at 6pm.

The neighborhood potlucks are open to everyone who lives, works or plays in Emerson-Garfield, so feel free to come for the first (or fifteenth) time and invite other people on your block. These potlucks are a great way to meet your neighbors and members of the community in the relaxed surroundings of our neighborhood parks.

Don’t forget to bring a dish to share! It can be anything — a salad, a bowl of fruit, a bag of snack chips, or your world-famous enchiladas. There will be a limited amount of free hot dogs grilled by our resident BBQ maven as a bonus.

The August meeting of the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council will follow the potluck at 7pm. You can download the minutes from the June meeting (pending approval) for review as well as the August agenda.

Market Cooking Demo TODAY (Aug 8) with Adam Hegsted

In case you haven’t spotted the news on the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Facebook page or the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market Facebook page, there’s a free cooking demo TODAY (Friday, August 8) with chef Adam Hegsted at the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market (806 W Knox).

The event ties in with National Farmers Market Week and will feature recipes provided by the Washington State Farmers Market Association using fresh market-sourced ingredients. It’s actually a “no-cook” cooking demo that will showcase kitchen knife skills and amazing low-cost dishes that are possible without even turning on the oven.

Even if the demo isn’t up your alley, there are plenty of reasons to make the market today. Fannie’s Ice Pops will be back — they were a huge hit last week — and new this week are Spokane Family Farm (with fresh, local milk) alongside Mama Torres Salsa.

Spokane Firefighters Union Presentation TONIGHT (July 23)

The Spokane Firefighters Union is holding a Community Meeting Concerning Emergency Services TONIGHT (Wednesday, July 23) at the Woman’s Club of Spokane (1428 W 9th). It runs from 6 to 8pm.

This community meeting is a continuation of the dialogue that the IAFF Local 29 initiated earlier this year by presenting at neighborhood council meetings across Spokane. (FYI, they spoke to the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council back in April.) Their eye-opening presentation discussed the department’s current state of affairs, such as lack of funding and uncertainty about the services they should be providing. It also compared the emergency services model here in Spokane with others around the country.

At tonight’s meeting, Spokane Firefighters Union President Don Waller will provide a recap of the presentation and cover some new material to bring attendees up to speed and help them understand the problems and potential solutions. Your feedback will be important, because it will have a direct impact on the kind of emergency services you and your neighbors receive.
