Children’s Author at the E-G Farmers’ Market (Oct 10)

Thanks to support from Catholic Charities Food for All, children’s author Katherine Pryor will be reading from her book Sylvia’s Spinach at the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market on Friday, October 10. The readings will take place at 3:30, 4:30 and 5:30pm.

Sylvia's SpinachCopies of the book will be for sale at the readings, or you can order your own copy in advance from Amazon. Food stamp recipients with children can receive a complimentary copy donated by Catholic Charities simply by showing their EBT card.

If you’re on Facebook, please RSVP to the event. And if you use EBT, remember that you get an extra $2 for spending (called Fresh Bucks) for every $5 you put on your Washington Quest card at the market. So, for example, $20 instantly becomes $28 that you can spend on all the vendors’ seasonal fruit and veggies. It’s a great way to make your money go a little further each month.

Add to Your Neighborhood’s Profile at Shaping Spokane

The City’s Planning Department is asking for your input on neighborhood histories and identities.

To take part, visit the interactive map at ShapingSpokane.org and use the icons to mark the things and places in your neighborhood that you consider noteworthy. By filling out the Q&A-style text fields on the My Neighborhood Story page, you can enter more in-depth information. You’re not obligated to answer every question. Just pick and choose what topics are important to you and write about them.

Your response will help build a more complete neighborhood profile that identifies what you and your neighbors value most about where you live, work, shop and play. With the community’s help and input, ShapingSpokane.org will showcase each of Spokane’s 27 neighborhoods and help establish policies for land use, transportation, parks, open spaces, shopping, dining, entertainment and employment.

The idea, or so we’ve been told, is that these profiles will be integrated into the City’s Comprehensive Plan to offer a bit of crowdsourced background and give developers a sense of the neighborhoods in which they’re building.

The more responses they get, the better and more complete the profile will be. So feel free to pass along the ShapingSpokane.org links to your neighbors and share them on social media.

And to show your true neighborhood pride, once you’re done with the virtual component, come out to support and participate in all the great neighborhood activities like the Greek Food Festival at Holy Trinity Church (September 25-27), Craftwalk (September 26), the Korean Food Sale at Spokane Hope Christian Reformed Church (September 26), and the Corbin Senior Center Auction (September 27).

Craftwalk This Friday! (Sep 26)

One last reminder that the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market is holding its first-ever Craftwalk this Friday, September 26. It will run concurrent with and alongside the usual weekly food-oriented market (806 W Knox, 3-7pm).

So far 23 vendors have confirmed that they’ll be joining us, and some of them will have multiple tables. Their goods include sculptural and painted art; custom jewelry from beads, metal, hemp, glass and wood; upcycled clothing, aprons and handbags; handmade health and beauty items; embroidery; doll clothes and doggie coats; holiday decorations; one-of-a-kind notepads and photo albums; hand-carved slingshots; knitwear such as hats, sweaters and scarves; duct-tape wallets; unique furniture and “usables” for your home and garden; greeting cards; and tons more.

In other words, there ought to be something for everyone, so there should be plenty of items that will make great gifts for others or treats for yourself.

CDBG Capital Projects Training TONIGHT (Sep 15)

capital projectThere will be a training session tonight (Monday, September 15) for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for capital projects at the West Central Community Center (1600 N. Belt) from 5:30 to 7pm.

These capital projects— that is, physical constructions and improvements like street lighting, landscaping and building renovations — need to emphasize two things:

  1. Improve the quality of life for your neighborhood’s low- to moderate-income population
  2. Address blight, such as graffiti-covered, dilapidated or disused buildings

This is a great opportunity if you or the organization your represent would like to invest in large-scale improvements with a positive community impact but have not been able to source sufficient funding.

Anyone is welcome to make an application for projects on our neighborhood’s behalf, but all applications for such projects will need to be approved and signed by the chair of the E-G Neighborhood Council.
