Register Your “Night Out” Block Party

Register Your “Night Out” Block Party

Don’t forget to register your Night Out block party! The deadline for registration is Tuesday, July 28.

What is the Night Out? It’s part of the annual National Night Out Against Crime (NNO) event that raises awareness about crime and drug prevention. Each year neighborhoods, community organizations, youth organizations, apartment complexes and businesses throughout Spokane are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the NNO.

The nationwide NNO event takes place on Tuesday, August 4 this year. It’s sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by Spokane C.O.P.S. All told, it involves over 16,250 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. Over 38.1 million people are expected to participate in 2015.

The purpose of the NNO is to

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
  • Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts.
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships.
  • Send a message to criminals, letting them know neighbors are organized and fighting back

You and your neighborhood, apartment community, mobile home park, organization or business can join Spokane C.O.P.S. by hosting a variety of special events such as a block party, cookouts, ice cream social, youth activities, visits from McGruff, police and fire departments, city council and so on.

Register your block party today by filling out the online registration form at the Spokane C.O.P.S. website or by picking up a form at your local C.O.P.S. Shop. In Emerson-Garfield, the nearest location is C.O.P.S. North Central (630 W Shannon).

You can ask for more information on NNO and local Night Out events in person or by calling Spokane C.O.P.S. at (509) 625-3301.

Compost Tea Demo (July 17)

Compost Tea Demo (July 17)

This week’s Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market on Friday, July 17 has a follow-up to the popular composting demo that launched the season back in June.

Master Composter and Master Gardener Ryan Herring will be demonstrating the process for making both compost extract and compost tea, and he’ll explain uses of each in your home garden.

This fun, educational demonstration will run for the duration of the market — that is, from 3 to 7pm in the parking lot of Knox Presbyterian (806 W Knox) right in the heart of Emerson-Garfield. Stop by anytime during the market to learn how easy it is to make nutritious rocket fuel for your plants!

The market is also into the second week of its brand new KERNEL pilot program for kids. This week’s activity deals with companion planting. Kids will get to take part in hands-on learning about how to pair certain plants (like tomatoes and basil) to deter garden pests or avoid competition for soil nutrients. Last week’s transplanting activity was so successful that the organizer ran out of zucchini starts!

See here for more market activities scheduled throughout July.

Since this is a grassroots market run by volunteers from the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council and an intern from Project Hope Spokane, there isn’t the budget to take out big newspaper ads or stage huge concerts. The market relies primarily on social media and word of mouth to let everyone know about its more than 20 vendors plus all the great musicians and activities it hosts. Please make a point to stop by and invite your friends, co-workers, family and neighbors!

Materials for the June 10 E-G Neighborhood Council Meeting

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meets tomorrow (WednesdayJune 10) at 6pm in the Corbin Senior Center (827 W Cleveland).

Unless the council votes otherwise, this will be the last meeting before the neighborhood-wide Summer Potluck on August 12, so it’s a good idea to attend and keep up to date on all that’s happening before the summer hiatus.

This month’s guest speaker is representatives from Spokane Public Montessori at Havermale, who’ll be talking about their new Bicycle Laboratory grant and the spring bike-centric event they’d like to plan along with the help of the neighborhood council. As Summer Parkways has decided to re-focus their efforts on the South Hill, this is a pleasant coincidence and could bring a similar event back to Emerson-Garfield.

Next we’ll talk about some of the preliminary locations the Greening Grant committee has identified for autumn plantings. That’ll be followed by rounding up some volunteers for the Summer Potluck as well as the traffic-circle plantings on Montgomery — which have been a long time coming.

There will be a brief recap of how the season opener of the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market went, and we’ll also hear about the sidewalks that are scheduled to be installed on the N Maple traffic island later this summer. After a few more odds and ends (including whether or not we want to meet in July), we’ll close with the usual roundup of reports from neighborhood reps who are keeping up to date on citywide issues like crime, planning and land use that are affecting or could affect Emerson-Garfield.

As always, we ask you to keep our printing expenses low and download the materials beforehand as PDFs:

The neighborhood council is open to anyone who lives, works or owns property in Emerson-Garfield and homeowners as well as renters are encouraged to come to these meetings. We regularly see attendance of 40+ people from all over the neighborhood, and there are no dues, fees or other obligations to participate.

It’s a great way to stay informed, meet your neighbors and take an active, grassroots role in shaping your neighborhood for the better!
