Police & Community Forum on Nov. 17

Police & Community Forum on Nov. 17

bridging-the-gapAll are welcome to attend a Police & Community Forum on November 17, at 6 pm, at East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone St.  Its purpose is to create an opportunity for dialogue between law enforcement and the community and to build trust.

The evening begins with panel discussion. Panels are made up of community members and law enforcement (both Spokane Police and Spokane County Sheriff’s Office) employees. Later, everyone breaks into small groups to discuss. The small-group discussion allows for better dialogue and more personal interactions. Panel members stay afterward to talk to people who have more questions/concerns.

The forums have been very helpful in opening up dialogue. Participant comments were overwhelmingly positive for all the forums, especially since the addition of small-group discussion. At the most recent forum, 82% agreed that the event helped build their trust. 89% of participants agreed that the event gave the community a chance to be heard.

Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to attend. Please feel free to share this information with others.

Call for Volunteers: 13th Annual Spokane River Clean-Up

Call for Volunteers: 13th Annual Spokane River Clean-Up

The 13th Annual Spokane River Clean-Up is September 17, 2016

SRCU7volunteersshoppingcartgone

Each year, hundreds of volunteers spend their Saturday morning picking up garbage and recyclable materials from our public lands along the Spokane River. In 2015, volunteers removed about 4 tons of debris – from High Bridge Park all the way to the University District and we sorted and recycled about a ton of the material collected.

The Spokane River Clean-Up is a great chance to give back for the great recreational opportunities our river corridor provides all year long! Registration for this year’s event is now open! To register, please go to www.spokanerivercleanup.org.

This is a fun and important event that has a huge impact on our river and its surroundings. The Spokane River Clean-Up is made possible by the service of about 100 key volunteers who go the extra mile to make the clean-up effective, efficient, safe, and fun. You can volunteer to for the clean-up crew or in a leadership role.

If you are interested in volunteering for a key role, please contact Danny Murphy at riversidestatepark1@gmail.com or (509) 795-4609, or Lindsay Box at lbox@landscouncil.org or (509) 209-2851.

Call for ideas on a neighborhood mural

Call for ideas on a neighborhood mural

There is an exciting annoucement from one of our neighborhood’s community resources, Fulcrum’s Ash Street Station. They will be the proud recipients of a mural to be painted on the north facing exterior wall. The Ash Street Station was selected by Gonzaga University’s Art Department, and the mural will be done in cooperation with Spokane Arts. Spokane Arts Supply will be donating art supplies and paint is being contributed via another project donor. What a great line-up of community partners coming together for a worthy project!art easel

Fulcrum’s Ash Street Station is offering the Emerson-Garfield neighborhood the opportunity to submit ideas for topics/themes that could be a part of the final design.

Anyone who wishes more information or who would like to submit any theme ideas for this mural, please contact:

Register Your National Night Out Block Party for 2016

Register Your National Night Out Block Party for 2016

If you’re thinking about holding a block party for the National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 2, please be sure to register with Spokane C.O.P.S. so they can make it a part of the citywide schedule.

The deadline for registration is MondayJuly 25. And while you’re at it, please let us know so we can spread the word via our e-newsletter and social media.

Why organize a block party on that date? Because it will be part of the annual National Night Out Against Crime (NNO), an event that raises awareness about crime and drug prevention. More information on NNO in Spokane is here.

NNO_2016

Each year neighborhoods, community organizations, youth organizations, apartment complexes and businesses throughout Spokane are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the NNO. It involves over 16,500 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. More than 38 million people are expected to participate in 2016.

The purpose of the NNO is to

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
  • Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts.
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships.
  • Send a message to criminals, letting them know neighbors are organized and fighting back

You and your neighborhood, apartment community, mobile home park, organization or business can join Spokane C.O.P.S. by hosting a variety of special events such as a block party, cookouts, ice cream social, youth activities, visits from McGruff, police and fire departments, city council members, and so on.

Register your block party today by filling out the online registration form at the Spokane C.O.P.S. website or by picking up a form at your local C.O.P.S. Shop. In Emerson-Garfield, the nearest location is C.O.P.S. North Central (630 W Shannon).

You can ask for more information on NNO and local Night Out events in person or by calling Spokane C.O.P.S. at (509) 625-3301.

Neighbor Day Festival (June 3)

Neighbor Day Festival (June 3)

This Friday (June 3) is the Neighbor Day Festival hosted by the West Central Community Center. It will run from 3 to 7pm in A.M. Cannon Park (1920 W Maxwell Ave), which is located right next to the center.

Neighbor Day is an annual community-wide festival with live music, free food, face painting, a fun street fair, market-style vendors, crafts and community resource booths. This year’s “Out of this World”-themed carnival is presented by Community Colleges of Spokane.

Neighbor Day 2016

This year promises to be extra special because it’s the 35th anniversary. And contrary to what the poster might suggest, the WCCC serves a much larger area than the West Central Neighborhood, so don’t hesitate to check out Neighbor Day if you’re from Emerson-Garfield, Audubon/Downriver, or all the many neighborhoods beyond.
