Materials for the October 9 EGNC Meeting

Materials for the October 9 EGNC Meeting

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meets this WednesdayOctober 9 at 7pm in the Corbin Senior Center. If you live, work, or own property in Emerson-Garfield, you’re encouraged to attend and take an active role in improving the neighborhood.

This meeting will feature two guest speakers: Fran Papenleur, who will discuss proposed changes to Photo Red fund allocation, and a representative from the Lands Council.

A few other items on the agenda:

  • Dump passes. Huzzah!
  • Preparation for the allocation of around $57k in Community Development Block Grants. There have been some (more) changes to the process this year, and they should be discussed prior to the November 9 meeting when the EGNC Steering Committee will vote on funding priorities and recipients.
  • Updates on crime, the farmers’ market, Neighborhood Planning, the Corbin Senior Center and more.

Oh, and as you might or might not know, last month the EGNC voted to end future monthly mailings to voting members. This means that you will no longer receive print copies of the materials in the post as has been customary in the past. Instead, you will have to download the agenda and minutes here on this blog or pick up one of the limited print copies that will be available at the meeting.

Date Corrections to the October Neighborhood E-mail

Date Corrections to the October Neighborhood E-mail

The neighborhood e-mail that just went out had some inconsistencies and typos in the dates for Neighborhood Planning events.

So to clarify:

  • The regular Neighborhood Planning preparation meeting for the regular stakeholder group is this coming Monday (October 7), 7pm at the Corbin Senior Center.
  • The neighborhood-wide planning workshop, which hopes to see participation from everyone in Emerson-Garfield, is on Thursday, October 10 starting at 6:30pm at the Corbin Senior Center.

In other news, we’re looking for a reliable newsletter writer with a strong attention to detail who can ease the burden of the currently overtaxed one.

Materials for the Sept 11 EGNC Meeting

Materials for the Sept 11 EGNC Meeting

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meets tonight (Wednesday, September 11) for its first regular meeting since June. (There was no meeting in July, and August was an informal potluck.)

This meeting departs from the usual format in that it’s a city-wide town hall with Mayor Condon (or his emissary) on the 2014 budget, so the EGNC agenda is relatively brief on account of the shortened meeting. A few items we will be considering:

  • The city has proposed changes in neighborhood council mailings due to — surprise! — funding shifts and cutbacks. As things stand the EGNC will have to decide between a monthly print mailing of meeting materials to all voting members (which is our status quo) or a bi-annual postcard mailing to the entire neighborhood.
  • The EGNC needs additional volunteers to sustain its current momentum in terms of neighborhood events (like the Concerts in the Park and the farmers’ market), outreach (like social media and flyers), and Neighborhood Planning. If your involvement is minimal, infrequent, or nonexistent, it’s time to help lighten the load on those who’re doing more than their fair share to make Emerson-Garfield better for everyone. A list of suggested volunteer niches will be posted online soon.
  • Fall dump passes will be available in October. We’ll divulge when and where at tonight’s meeting.
  • Emerson-Garfield Steering Committee (i.e., the voting members of the neighborhood council) has just over $57k in Community Development Block Grant funds to allocate for 2014. The application and allocation process is similar to last year’s heavily altered process, but there have been some changes based on community feedback. Those will be addressed briefly.

Save a tree — or prepare for the forthcoming mailing cutbacks — by downloading tonight’s agenda and minutes for approval here:

We look forward to seeing you tonight!

Free Social Media Training, June 24

Free Social Media Training, June 24

The City of Spokane’s Office of Neighborhood Services is offering free social media training for neighborhoods (and, by association, neighborhood-centric organizations) on Monday, June 24 from 6 to 7:30pm at Tincan [map].

During the 90-minute session, participants will learn how to set up and maintain accounts with Nextdoor, Twitter, Facebook, and blog sites like Blogger and WordPress. They’ll also learn why social media matters in building stronger neighborhood ties.

BSN Social Media Training, Jun 24

Little ol’ Emerson-Garfield was recently highlighted by the ONS as a neighborhood that is using social media effectively, so a representative from our neighborhood will be there to share firsthand experience with blogging, tweeting, and Facebook-ing.

Even though we’ve received a pat on the back in this area, we’re still encouraging people in Emerson-Garfield to participate — because when it comes to getting the word out about neighborhood events, more routine and more effective communication is never a bad thing. If you’re interested, please RSVP to Boris Borisov via e-mail or at (509) 625-6087.

Materials for the Apr 10 EGNC Meeting

The next Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council Meeting will take place tomorrow (Wednesday), April 10. It will start at 7pm and be held at the Corbin Senior Center.

Please keep in mind that this month we’re encouraging people to attend the STA Moving Forward open house directly before the EGNC meeting. The info at the open house will probably create some topics for discussion, because the STA’s proposed changes will impact our neighborhood in various ways.

Meeting materials (agenda, minutes for approval) are available from the Downloads page. Or just download them here:

This month Cecile from Heart of Spokane is going to talk about developments in the N. Monroe business district and their plans for the upcoming Girls Day Out event.

The neighborhood council will also be holding elections of new officers. If you haven’t already done so (and you’re a current EGNC member), send an e-mail to emerson.garfield@gmail.com and get your name on the ballot.

Here’s what else we’ll be covering:

Spring Cleanup program on April 27
• Updates for the neighborhood’s summer calendar — including the annual potluck and concerts in the park
• Developing a connection with the Institute for Extended Learning

We hope to see you there!
