Call for a Short-Term Licensing Rep

The Community Assembly is looking for a representative to serve on a Short-Term Licensing Committee.

The purpose of the committee is to cogitate and arrive at recommendations for a proposed short-term licensing ordinance. This will affect things like AirBnB rentals.

There will be a total of four meetings:

  • June 4. Introduction to issue, brainstorming
  • Jun 18. Explore and digest what other communities are doing, refine what we want to do in Spokane (e.g., taxes, safety, building)
  • July 2. Review draft ordinance that staff develops, provide feedback
  • July 14. Finalize comments

Vendor Lineup for 2014 Opening Market

Below is the vendor lineup for the 2014 season opening of the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market on Friday, June 6.

1950s fruit and ladies

Even though some full-season vendors — such as Jennifer Michelle Massage, who many people are looking forward to seeing again — will miss the opening date, this is a good preview of what’s to come during our market’s second year. During peak season (July and August) even more vendors are scheduled to take part.

The opening band will be Spokaloo, featuring E-G’s very own Bryant McKinley. We’ll also be honoring Claire Menzer and Karissa Orlob, the two winners of the market’s first-ever poster contest, on June 6.

Trinity Catholic School will have a table where they’ll be selling bingo tickets for their 24th annual Cow Plop, a fun neighborhood event with cash prizes that will take place the following day. The Main Market Co-op might also be there with an info table.

Last but not least, the central market booth will have a limited number of $20 dump passes for E-G residents in case they didn’t get a chance to offload everything during Spring Cleanup. To claim a pass, be sure to bring ID.

Help Sponsor E-G’s Concerts in the Park

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council (EGNC) is gearing up for its second annual Concert in the Park!

This year we’re joining up with Summer Parkways to create an all-out block party around Corbin Park on Friday, July 18 from 6 to 9pm. Sara Brown (of the Sara Brown Band) will be performing a duet from 6 to 8pm.

We’re looking for private and business sponsors who will join us in making our neighborhood come alive. At least $500 needs to be raised to help pay for the permit, insurance, band, and flyers.

All sponsors will have the opportunity to have their names — or business names — added to the Concert in the Park event posters. Those names will also be highlighted during the concert’s announcements.

If you’d like to be a sponsor for this summer’s concert, you can make a donation for any amount with a check made out to Eline Helm with the memo “Summer Concert”. Then send them to:

Or you can give Eline a call at (509) 847-9166 and she’ll come pick it up. If you’re paying with a personal check but want your business name mentioned, please make sure to include the name of your business. All funds need to be received no later than June 30.

You’ll receive an e-mail or a phone call to confirm receipt of your donation and to get additional info needed to advertise your business on our concert flyer.

Since funding has been slow in coming this year, the Concert in the Park series will be concentrating solely on the Summer Parkways co-event. If we receive enough donations, we’ll be able to expand the series to two concerts as planned — one in Emerson Park and one in Corbin Park every summer.

Piper Farms, one of the vendors at this year’s Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market, is looking for a reliable and diligent part-time person to help around their U-pick blueberry and raspberry farm located six miles north of the Spokane Valley Mall.

Days and hours are flexible. Most of the work will consist of helping with the weeding and picking berries at both farms. The work will continue through October.

Trinity Cow Plop (June 7)

Trinity Catholic School (1306 W Montgomery) will be holding its 24th annual Cow Plop on Saturday, June 7 from 11am to 4pm.

What’s a cow plop? Well, it makes a bingo-like sport out of natural bovine deposits. They graze and poop as usual, and depending on where the poop lands, it can earn you a heck of a lot of money. The top prize is a respectable $3,100, and there are 50 more cash prizes to be won.

To keep everyone entertained while the cow does its business, there’s a street carnival with slides, an obstacle course, arts and crafts, games, and plenty of family fun. A raffle will be held for a two-hour GameTruck party as well as a family four-pack at Laser Quest. Plus there will be pizza from Pizza Rita and popcorn from Kettle Krazy Kettle Corn.

The event is open to everyone, not just Trinity students, and is a great way to help raise funds for a neighborhood school.
