Meet Your Neighbors: CrossFit Dūrātus

After a year of planning, six months of preparation, and a month of work in the space, CrossFit Dūrātus (1303 N Washington) [map] opened its doors in August in the Emerson-Garfield neighborhood.

Already enjoying a loyal following of dedicated athletes and fitness enthusiasts, CrossFit Dūrātus is an inspiring and growing local business, founded by Kevin Longmeier.

“What I love most about CrossFit is that it is more than just fitness. It’s a community,” says Kevin.

And fortunately for Emerson-Garfield, Kevin cares a lot about community, including the neighborhood in which his business resides. CrossFit Dūrātus joins Landie Chappell (of PrimeLending) and Washington Grown in becoming the latest sponsor of our Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market, and Kevin even generously donated the grand prize for tonight’s end-of-season drawing… a free one-month membership to CrossFit Dūrātus.

Even if you aren’t the lucky winner of free membership to CrossFit Dūrātus, you should certainly check out their classes or personal training options. There is something about the environment and culture Kevin has created there. It only takes a moment to see it is a community of hard workers challenging each other to reach for their best. We’re glad to have them in the neighborhood!

New E-G Farmers’ Market Tokens

New E-G Farmers’ Market Tokens

The new tokens for the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market just arrived!

The $1 and $5 tokens were generously sponsored by Washington Grown and Landie Chappell (of PrimeLending), respectively. We’re incredibly grateful for their support and are looking forward to putting the new tokens into circulation at tomorrow’s market.

EGFM tokens

If you have some tokens knocking about in your pocket already, don’t worry. You don’t have to exchange them (though you can if you want to!). Vendors will still gladly accept the old ones, even into next season.

And remember: These tokens (just like the old ones) are also valid at the West Central Marketplace, which takes place every Tuesday from 3-6pm at A.M. Cannon Park (right next to the West Central Community Center). We’re the few — if not the only — farmers’ markets in Spokane who have joint currency!

New Public Plaza by Spokane City Hall

New Public Plaza by Spokane City Hall

Here’s a heads up on downtown construction and road closures that was issued by City Hall on Friday:

A new public plaza is planned in the parking lot north of City Hall that will include seating and gathering space for events. In appreciation of the 125-year partnership between WWP/Avista and the people of Spokane, the newly developed City Hall Plaza will be a gift from Avista Corp. shareholders to the City of Spokane.

Work on City Hall Plaza will begin on Tuesday, July 23. The north parking lot will close permanently following the City Council meeting on Monday, July 22. Three handicapped spots will be moved to the lot on the southwest side of City Hall.

Improvements will also be made to Post Street, which will close for several weeks beginning in mid-September. The Post Street project will be finished in late fall.

Current parking options during construction:

  • Street parking will be available before work begins on Post Street and after it is finished.
  • River Park Square parking garage with skywalk accessibility to City Hall.

More information on the Huntington Park improvement is given in this Spokesman-Review story. Avista also blogged about it here.

Roadworks in Emerson-Garfield

Roadworks in Emerson-Garfield

Say hello to your friendly neighborhood road construction crew (on Montgomery).

Montgomery Road CrewApparently they’re close to finishing here in Emerson-Garfield, but they only intend to do half of the western portion of Montgomery, Mansfield, Carlisle, Jackson and York this year. No one quite seems to know why.
