Meet Your Neighbors: Mary Charbonneau

How did we miss this?

Last year Emerson-Garfield resident Mary Charbonneau won the Peirone Prize as part of The Inlander’s Give Guide, the alt-weeky’s annual philanthropy issue in which they highlight people who are making things better here in the Inland Northwest.

The paper featured a long profile of Mary and her work with Washington Bassett Rescue.

Mary is a familiar face at neighborhood council meetings, neighborhood events, and even (or especially) in the virtual ‘hood on our Facebook page.

What’s even cooler is that Mary isn’t the only one in the neighborhood who has been highlighted by the Give Guide for making a difference. In 2011, Brent and Amy Hendricks, who run Global Neighborhood Thrift here in E-G, won the same philanthropic prize, which was accompanied by a similar profile writeup in the paper.

Now in its third year, the Give Guide is once again calling for nominations of deserving individuals for the Peirone Prize. Whether it’s education, social action, the environment, animal welfare, or community gardening, they want to know who to recognize when it comes to people generating positive change in our community.

So send the full names of your nominations, their ages (if you know them), and a sentence or two explaining why you think they deserve recognition to giveguide@inlander.com by no later than Thursday, August 1.

And who knows — maybe Emerson-Garfield will be represented three years out of three!

Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council T-Shirts

It’s all going off.

As of today, we have brand new Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council T-shirts thanks to Pat Maguire. Pat’s an E-G resident and the owner of Spokane Valley Screen Printing. Totally unsolicited, he offered to make us T-shirts so that EGNC members and organizers can be better recognized at neighborhood events and strut their E-G pride.

The front bears the logo designed by former EGNC Chair Liorah Wichser (it won our neighborhood logo contest a few months back). On the back it reads “Emerson-Garfield Ambassador.”

Huge thanks to Pat for volunteering his services. The organizers will be proudly sporting these Ts at the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market today. And depending on the response, we might be printing a variation of this T-shirt for general sale. Stay tuned.

Farmers’ Market Vendor Lineup

On Friday we sent confirmation e-mails to the vendors and food trucks who had applied to be part of the first-ever Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market. Here are the ones you can expect to see each week at the market this season:

Keep in mind that this is by no means the definitive list. We’re awaiting signed applications from a few more vendors and food trucks, and there are also day vendors who will be appearing intermittently. To add some promotional suspense, we’ll keep those day vendors a surprise until the week before they’re scheduled to attend.

However, we are still trying to recruit some specialist food trucks (especially tacos and BBQ) for our rotating lineup. If you’re interested, please download an application here — and if you have a favorite food truck, urge them to take part. We’re not looking for any more full-season trucks, just some to be part of a round robin schedule to mix things up a bit.

One of the things we’re especially proud of is the fact that five of the fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen vendors listed above are located within Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood. So not only will the market give Emerson-Garfield residents access to fresh, local food, it will also help bring some much-deserved attention to these Emerson-Garfield businesses.

We have a number of really exciting upcoming neighborhood events, and we could use your help in spreading the word.

Like most all-volunteer organizations, we’re limited by funds and manpower. We can’t afford to print enough flyers to reach everyone — and even if we did, we don’t have enough members to make sure that a copy is delivered to everyone in the neighborhood.

So please download the flyers below (they’re standard PDFs) and print out a copy or two for your neighbors, church, or workplace. It would lift some of the load from our shoulders, and it would make sure that more and more people hear about these great neighborhood events.
