Call for ideas on a neighborhood mural

There is an exciting annoucement from one of our neighborhood’s community resources, Fulcrum’s Ash Street Station. They will be the proud recipients of a mural to be painted on the north facing exterior wall. The Ash Street Station was selected by Gonzaga University’s Art Department, and the mural will be done in cooperation with Spokane Arts. Spokane Arts Supply will be donating art supplies and paint is being contributed via another project donor. What a great line-up of community partners coming together for a worthy project!art easel

Fulcrum’s Ash Street Station is offering the Emerson-Garfield neighborhood the opportunity to submit ideas for topics/themes that could be a part of the final design.

Register Your National Night Out Block Party for 2016

If you’re thinking about holding a block party for the National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 2, please be sure to register with Spokane C.O.P.S. so they can make it a part of the citywide schedule.

The deadline for registration is Monday, July 25. And while you’re at it, please let us know so we can spread the word via our e-newsletter and social media.

Why organize a block party on that date? Because it will be part of the annual National Night Out Against Crime (NNO), an event that raises awareness about crime and drug prevention. More information on NNO in Spokane is here.

Each year neighborhoods, community organizations, youth organizations, apartment complexes and businesses throughout Spokane are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the NNO. It involves over 16,500 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. More than 38 million people are expected to participate in 2016.

The purpose of the NNO is to

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
  • Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts.
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships.
  • Send a message to criminals, letting them know neighbors are organized and fighting back

You and your neighborhood, apartment community, mobile home park, organization or business can join Spokane C.O.P.S. by hosting a variety of special events such as a block party, cookouts, ice cream social, youth activities, visits from McGruff, police and fire departments, city council members, and so on.

Register your block party today by filling out the online registration form at the Spokane C.O.P.S. website or by picking up a form at your local C.O.P.S. Shop. In Emerson-Garfield, the nearest location is C.O.P.S. North Central (630 W Shannon).

You are invited to be a part of a community conversation about quality and affordable housing in Spokane. The Mayor’s Housing Quality – Community meeting is next Tuesday, June 28th at the Downtown Public Library from 5:30-7PM.

The Mayor’s Housing Quality Task Force (HQT) has begun meeting to align City investments, resources and policies to support safe, quality housing in mixed-income neighborhoods. Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Training Programs

The Fulcrum Institute‘s Ash Street Workforce Training Station (1925 N Ash) here in Emerson-Garfield is offering another valuable series of construction pre-apprenticeship training programs in partnership with the Associated General Contractors.

This program is ideal for anyone who is considering a career in the construction industry and wants an opportunity for a head start. The registration fee is just $25.

  • Career guide to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, welding, heavy equipment, ironwork, residential
  • OSHA 10 certification
  • Hand and power tools
  • First aid/CPR with AED certification
  • Construction math
  • Intro to signaling and rigging
  • Material handling and forklift certification
  • Work concepts
  • Communication skills
  • Hands-on practice

The two upcoming sessions will run from:

  • July 11 to 28, 8am to 4pm, Monday through Thursday
  • August 1 to 18, 8am to 4pm, Monday through Thursday
