The Emerson Community Garden will be holding its second work day of the season this Saturday (May 18) from 1-4pm. The garden is located at 3209 N. Madison [map].
Here are some of the things they have planned:
Finish roto-tilling the corn bed
Prepare the raspberry bed for new starts
Build and paint signs to mark the rows of plants
Plant seeds and starts
A lot got done during the first work day of the season, and the EGC members are hoping this Saturday will be equally fun and productive.

And in case you haven’t been by the garden recently, there’s a new sign. It looks fantastic!
RSD has been going since 2007 and has grown into a global event. It’s a chance to show some love to your local record store, where, unlike iTunes and other digital marketplaces, there’s usually some boffin in a faded band T-shirt on hand who knows where to source the complete discography of your favorite artist — including split 7-inches and tour-only EPs.
Here’s what the organizers say about the event itself:
This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.
In honor of RSD, both major and indie labels tend to offer limited-editon pressings of new or classic albums. Warner Bros., for example, is issuing a deluxe edition of Built to Spill’s Live (2000) and Cream’s Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2005) in addition to RSD-only albums by Iron & Wine, The Flaming Lips, Teagan and Sara, Deftones, and more.
Why is this neighborhood news? Well, Emerson-Garfield has got a great record store on N. Monroe called 4000 Holes (video below) that’s officially taking part in RSD. The Bachelor Pad also sells records, and it’s just up the road from 4000 Holes.
Stop in, get some 180-gram vinyl and a few rare 7″ — and then pick up a turntable from one of the vintage shops if you don’t already have one. 4000 Holes will be featuring live music by Dead Man’s Pants and Gorilla & Rabbit.
As the 2013 planting season gets underway, the Emerson Community Garden is gearing up for its second year. It will be holding a work day on Saturday, April 20 from 1–4pm for all those interested in participating or just stopping by to meet the neighborhood gardeners.
They will be preparing the garden beds for planting as well as doing general spring cleaning. That will involve activities like mowing garden paths, spreading mulch, pulling weeds, installing the garden’s sign, making row signs with plant names, and planting the early crops.

The Emerson Community Garden is located on at 3209 N. Madison (between W. Alice and W. Dalton) [map]. Annual membership costs $20 per family. That money goes toward supplies like seeds, water, tools, fertilizer and general upkeep.
The ECG is slightly different from some neighborhood gardens in that it’s a collective/family-style garden. Everyone shares in the work, and everyone shares in the produce.
This year the gardeners are looking to make various improvements to the plot. They need a gate and would like to build a shed. Volunteers and donations are needed to make that happen.
