First off, an important correction to the e-mail announcement that went out earlier this morning.

Starting in September, Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meetings will be held on the third TUESDAY of each month, not the third Thursday. It goes to show that you can proofread something a dozen times and still overlook a glaring mistake.

The details in the rest of the e-mail still stand: Namely, that the EGNC has organized a special planning-focused meeting for next Tuesday, August 25 from 6pm to 7:30pm.

It will be held at St. Andrew’s Church (2404 N Howard) and is open to everyone in the neighborhood.

This planning meeting is in response to the City of Spokane’s Future Land Use Map (FLUM), which was made public earlier this month.

The FLUM has identified large parts of Emerson-Garfield for high-intensity residential, commercial and mixed-use development. The proposed zoning changes could impact an additional 25% of our neighborhood.

The purpose of the planning meeting is to better understand the rationale behind the FLUM, to predict its potential impact—both positive and negative—on the neighborhood, and to develop constructive feedback for City planners.

A quick update to notify everyone that, due to the current Air Quality Index (AQI), today’s free Concert in the Park has been postponed. It was a mutual decision by both the organizers and the band.

The rescheduled date is Saturday, August 15. Although the date has changed, it will be at the same time (4-6pm) and same place (Emerson Park).

In the meantime, be sure to check out the band’s podcast, The Adventures of Rockabilly Space Force.

Once again, we’d like to thank our sponsors, the City of Spokane’s Office of Neighborhood Services, Spokane City Credit Union, Gene Brake Real Estate Svc, and the North Monroe Business District, for making this concert totally free and open to the public.

Monroe Day at the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market (June 26)

We hope to see everyone at the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market this Friday (June 26) for Monroe Day!

Monroe Day is an annual neighborhood tradition that puts the locally owned small businesses of our North Monroe Business District front and center.

As part of the event, several neighborhood businesses and organizations will have booths at the market so you can connect face to face with them while you’re enjoying what the vendors have to offer.

It’s a great opportunity to learn about shops that you might not have visited or meet the owners and staff of your favorite spots. Some businesses may even be offering samples, promos and swag.

The market is held in Emerson Park, which is one block west of Monroe at our district’s north end. It’s a summery, shady, neighborly way to wind down your week.

The cherry on top is that cherries 🍒 are currently in season for a little while longer!

2026 Spring Cleanup Is This Weekend!

2026 Spring Cleanup Is This Weekend!

The annual Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Spring Cleanup is happening on Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 9am to 12:30pm at Faith Bible Church (600 W Cora Ave).

This is a free neighborhood clean-up event for residents of Emerson Garfield neighborhood. It’s organized by the Emerson Garfield Neighborhood Council and hosted by Faith Bible Church.

The cleanup is a drive-through, drop-off format. Line up in your car or truck along Cora, then wait to be admitted and directed to the proper station. Once you’re there, volunteers will help you empty your vehicle.

Please don’t take the volunteers for granted. They are sacrificing their Saturday to provide hours of physical labor. If you are able to help offload your refuse, please do so.

Keep in mind that this is only for residential waste, not business or industrial waste, and there are only enough resources for Emerson-Garfield residents (click here for a map). You’ll need to bring some form of ID—like a driver’s license and a utility bill—to prove residency.

Guidelines for what can be disposed of:

  • Trash: Your everyday junk/household trash, furniture and appliances (water heaters must be drained; no refrigerators/freezers); two (2) tire limit (rims must be removed). Mattress and box springs are allowed. Must break large items into smaller items (no large furniture). Items must be able to be lifted over an 8’ wall. Nails must be removed from wood.
  • Clean green: Leaves and grass clippings (need to be bagged), sod less than 2″ thick, pine needles, pine cones, brush, limbs less than 3″ in diameter and less than 4 feet long. No rock, gravel, or animal feces.
  • Metal recycling: Any mostly metal item, such as empty water heaters, stoves, washers/ dryers, lawnmowers (drained of oil).
  • Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest: Will e-cycle your old computers, TVs, microwaves, and electronic gear- working or not. Other gently used items are accepted for their thrift stores.
  • Not Accepted: The City can refuse to haul anything considered dangerous, hazardous, toxic, corrosive, or reactive including but not limited to items that contain Freon, fluorescent lighting tubing, compact fluorescent light bulbs or any mercury-containing lights. Paint, drywall and concrete will not be accepted.
