Special Transportation Meetings – Logan Neighborhood Transportation Issues Special Meeting and All About Greenways

Logan Neighborhood Meeting

Following up on the neighborhood greenway presentations and planning started at the Logan Neighborhood Council meetings last autumn, the LNC is holding a topic-specific meeting to discuss transportation issues in the Logan area, with a special focus on issues relating to walking, cycling, traffic safety, and traffic calming. They will continue the discussion about neighborhood greenway planning and consider projects we want to submit for the city’s traffic calming program. Time permitting, they will also kick off a discussion about other transportation-related issues in the Logan neighborhood, such as Safe Routes to Schools, difficult intersections, right-sizing arterial streets, and whatever else is currently impacting the health and accessibility of people who live, work, learn, play, and shop in the neighborhood.

What: Logan neighborhood walking, cycling, traffic calming, and other transportation issues special meeting
Where: Forza Coffee Company (1028 N Hamilton)
When: Tuesday, February 11, from 6:30-8:00pm

This meeting is open to all Logan residents, as well as any non-residents with an interest in making Logan’s streets safer, more accessible, and more comfortable for all modes of travel.

All About Greenways

Spokane is getting its first neighborhood greenway on N Cincinnati Ave, and is currently planning greenways in neighborhoods around the city. But what exactly are greenways, why are we building them, and what effect will they have on Spokane’s transportation network?

This educational event is open to all members of the public who want to learn more about neighborhood greenways, especially members of neighborhood councils that are interested in or currently pursuing the creation of greenways in their own neighborhoods. The presentation will include “Part One: Intro to Greenways,” “Part Two: Planning a Greenway Network,” and a brand-new “Part Three: Including Greenways in Your 2020 Traffic Calming Application.”

Presentation content includes:

  • What exactly greenways are and why we’re building them
  • Examples of greenway networks in other cities
  • The potential benefits greenway network can provide for improved cycling, walking, access to bus stops, access for people with mobility impairments, and overall traffic calming and safety
  • The pros and cons of greenways vs other types of cycling infrastructure
  • Qualitative and quantitative traits of healthy vs unhealthy greenways
Greenway design best practices (and mistakes to avoid)
  • How neighborhood councils can get greenways built (and built sooner) in their neighborhood

The Gathering House presents The Red Carpet Murder

The Gathering House presents The Red Carpet Murder

The Gathering House (733 West Garland Ave) presents, The Red Carpet Murder, a Murder Mystery Dinner for Valentine’s weekend. Join the fun for a memorable night out!

Catch one of three show dates.
Thursday, Feb 13 at 6pm
Friday, Feb 14 at 6pm
or Saturday, Feb 15 at 6pm

Cost for the dinner and show is $40.00. Reservations required before Feb. 11. Tickets are available at Streetwisespokane.org. For more information call The Lion’s Share Theatre at (509) 879-0302.

It’s Hollywood’s Golden Era and the stars walk the red carpet for the major movie premier of 1947. Guests will be immersed in the red carpet experience and watch the story unfold throughout the evening. It’s a comic takeoff on major film stars of the era and their rivalries. As in all murder mysteries, something goes wrong and a star ends up dead.

Following the theme, those attending the are encouraged to dress up for their own red carpet experience. Photo opportunities will be available and prizes awarded for the best costumes from the era as well as solving the mystery.

The event sponsor, The Gathering House, strives to be, as its name suggests, a gathering place for the Spokane community. Many different types of events are presented that offer hope and meaning as well as plain old fun. It is hoped this theatrical event is the first of many theatre performances to take place at the Garland District venue.

The Red Carpet Murder is a fundraiser to supply food and essentials for participants in Spokane’s Community Court. The Community Court was established in 2013 to more effectively help those struggling with addiction, homelessness and poverty by clearing up misdemeanor charges, holding them accountable through community service, and connecting them with agencies that can help.

Cost for the dinner and show is $40.00.  Reservations required before Feb. 11.  Tickets are available at Streetwisespokane.org.  For more information call The Lion’s Share Theatre at (509) 879-0302.

Volunteer Opportunity – Help Build Spokane’s Pop-Up Cycle Track!

Volunteer Opportunity – Help Build Spokane’s Pop-Up Cycle Track!

The City of Spokane will install a temporary two-way cycle track, or protected bike lane, on Spokane Falls Boulevard. This popup pilot will test a cycle track as a protected bikeway that supports people of all ages and abilities. It will be installed on Saturday, Sept 28th and removed on the following Saturday, Oct 5th.  They need your help if this is to be successful!

They are looking for people willing to help stripe and install the temporary barriers, direct cyclists, survey users, and take down the material at the end of the pilot. They are also looking for artists who are interested in creating stencils and/or other art to beautify the project.

They have 2 primary goals:

  1. Connect the North Landing of the Gateway Bridge to the Cincinnati Greenway
  2. Test a two-way cycle track in Spokane to see how it works for our cyclists and drivers.

If this project is successful, they hope to continue using popup infrastructure as a way to demonstrate new and innovative ways to strengthen our cycling network.

If you are interested in joining our volunteer team, please sign up here.  Sign your name in the time slot(s) of your choice on the first sheet AND add your contact information on the second sheet.
