Garfield Elementary Culture & Community Night, May 16

Garfield Elementary Culture & Community Night, May 16

Garfield Elementary is holding its seventh annual Culture & Community Night this Friday, May 16 from 6 to 8pm.

The event is like a mini Unity in the Community, with booths showcasing cultures from all over the world. There will be free snacks, bingo games, fun craft activities, exciting performers, art education (including learning how to write your name in Japanese) and lots more. Reverend Happy Watkins will also be returning this year to speak.

And parents, there’s lots more than kids’ activities. The local C.O.P.S. Shop will be on hand to provide safety IDs for children.

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council will be tabling a booth there too. Volunteers will be on hand to talk to you about how to request free street trees in front of your house, how to get sidewalks repaired or replaced, our ambitious Neighborhood Planning effort, this year’s Concerts in the Park series, the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market and the role of the neighborhood council in improving the quality of life here in E-G.

If you have questions about the Culture & Community Night, call Dee Dee on (509) 324-2700.

Free Concert in the Park, July 28

Free Concert in the Park, July 28

This marks the year that the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council launches its Concerts in the Park series. The first of those concerts — and the only one for 2013 — will take place on Sunday, July 28 in Emerson Park (1116 W Alice) [map] from 4-6pm.

Admission to the concert is free. The R&B/soul band Island Soul will be performing, and Smokin’ Rome’s food truck will be on hand serving up his delicious BBQ and soul food. So it’ll be a feast for at least two of the five senses.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic items as well as friends and family — but please leave any alcohol at home. And that goes for trying to consume it discreetly, too. Otherwise it jeopardizes the possibility that these concerts will continue in the future.

Eline Helm has been instrumental (no pun intended) in getting these concerts off the ground. She arranged the venue, took out the necessary permits and insurance, sought out the band, and handled all the funding. Mallory Battista pitched in by designing the eye-catching poster you see above, and Jackie Wheler designed the promotional brochure that will be available at the concert.

We also had a very generous donor on the neighborhood council who ensured that we had the initial money to do all this. Neighborhood businesses who chipped in are Zip’s on N. Monroe, Caffe Delicio, the West Central Association of Businesses and the Corbin Park Homeowners Association. Hamilton Studio is kindly loaning their PA for use at the concert.

If things go smoothly and there’s an encouraging turnout, this year’s concert will serve as a stepping stone to more ambitious series in coming years, which will be held in both Corbin and Emerson Parks.

Reminder: July Meetings and Breaks

Reminder: July Meetings and Breaks

Just a reminder that there is no Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meeting this month. Normally the EGNC meets on the second Wednesday of each month, but this is not the case for July, when we traditionally take a break for the summer holidays.

There is, however, a Neighborhood Planning meeting on this Wednesday, July 10, at the Corbin Senior Center [map]. It starts at 7pm and will run about an hour. If you’re on Facebook, please RSVP here (and please “Like” the E-G Neighborhood page while you’re at it).

This is an ideal activity for anyone with an interest in helping to determine what our neighborhood looks like in five, ten or even twenty years’ time — it doesn’t matter whether you’re a seasoned neighborhood stalwart or just someone who’s curious about Emerson-Garfield’s future.

But one meeting instead of two doesn’t mean that there’s nothing going on. Looking  ahead into July and August, we have the launch of our first-ever weekly farmers’ market on Friday, July 19 (click here for times, location, and more details). We also have a free concert in Emerson Park [map] on Sunday, July 28, which is also the same day as the Christ Our Hope Bible Church’s Parking Lot Party. Fortunately, they only overlap by half an hour. Hit the concert first at 4pm, then head down to the PLP!

In August, we have our annual summer potluck. This year it’s in Corbin Park [map] and starts at 6pm. That will happen in place of the August EGNC meeting — in other words, on Wednesday, August 14.

Get an overview of all those events on our calendar page or on Facebook; registered Facebook users are encouraged to RSVP. We’re also asking for your help to spread the word — more on that (with download links to flyers for printing) is here.

Record Store Day, Apr 20

Record Store Day, Apr 20

RSD_2013_thumbA reminder that this Saturday, April 20 is Record Store Day.

RSD has been going since 2007 and has grown into a global event. It’s a chance to show some love to your local record store, where, unlike iTunes and other digital marketplaces, there’s usually some boffin in a faded band T-shirt on hand who knows where to source the complete discography of your favorite artist — including split 7-inches and tour-only EPs.

Here’s what the organizers say about the event itself:

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.

In honor of RSD, both major and indie labels tend to offer limited-editon pressings of new or classic albums. Warner Bros., for example, is issuing a deluxe edition of Built to Spill’s Live (2000) and Cream’s Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2005) in addition to RSD-only albums by Iron & Wine, The Flaming Lips, Teagan and Sara, Deftones, and more.

Why is this neighborhood news? Well, Emerson-Garfield has got a great record store on N. Monroe called 4000 Holes (video below) that’s officially taking part in RSD. The Bachelor Pad also sells records, and it’s just up the road from 4000 Holes.

Stop in, get some 180-gram vinyl and a few rare 7″ — and then pick up a turntable from one of the vintage shops if you don’t already have one. 4000 Holes will be featuring live music by Dead Man’s Pants and Gorilla & Rabbit.
