Infill Housing Online Q&A (Nov. 16)

The City of Spokane is currently focusing on “infill housing,” which means that planners and policymakers are working on revisions to regulations that will enable additional housing development on vacant lots and parcels in already built-up areas.

Here in Emerson-Garfield, infill is the kind of development that we’re most likely to see over the next 20 years, so it’s important to see what code changes are being proposed and why. Informing yourself now and shaping policy accordingly is the best way to participate in this process, not when a project starts to break ground on the lot next door.

An in-person open house was already held at the West Central Community Center about two weeks ago. But not everyone is able to attend those meetings, and that’s why the City is holding a live online Q&A tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 16) at 7am on the City’s Facebook page. That will be an opportunity for you to ask questions, offer feedback, or have your comments heard.

The first proposed changes to cottage housing, pocket residential and compact lot standards, as part of a larger series involving changes to other regulations, would allow additional ownership options and creative site arrangements, while updating and enhancing the design guidelines. A committee reviewing infill development on such vacant land recommended the changes. The map to the left shows where infill will likely be most heavily concentrated.

Transportation Projects Open House – Tuesday, Sept 19

The Spokane Regional Transportation Council is (SRTC) is proposing to invest almost $800 million into the local transportation system in the next several years and is holding an open house on Tuesday, September 19, 4-6pm at 421 W Riverside Ave (Paulsen Center), Ste. 504 (flyer) to give members of the public an idea of what projects that would fund.

Every year, SRTC updates the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) with projects and programs jurisdictions within Spokane County plan to build or implement during the upcoming four years. The draft 2018-2021 can be viewed at https://www.srtc.org/transportation-improvement-program/. It includes $789,399,322 in transportation investments. That will fund 106 projects. Three of the major projects will be highlighted at the open house. Presentations start at 4:30 p.m. and will cover:

Staff from SRTC, Spokane Transit and the Washington State Department of Transportation will be on hand to answer questions. If you can’t make it to the open house can still share your thoughts. Comments can be emailed to contact.srtc@srtc.org, mailed to SRTC or phoned in to (509) 343-6370.

Cleaning from the Corridor Report

Cleaning from the Corridor was a great success! Thank you to everyone who was able to volunteer their time, hard work, and supplies.

This project garnered 493 volunteers for a total of 2008.5 volunteer hours. $19,205.04 was donated to complete clean-up and beautification projects as well as refreshments to keep the volunteers going strong throughout the day. 1698 food, hygiene, cleaning, pet food, medicine, and clothing items were donated.

CLEANING FROM THE CORRIDOR – TODAY FROM 9AM – 12PM

Spring has sprung and the city’s annual volunteer event Cleaning from the Corridor (CFTC) will be in full swing on this gorgeous iconic Spokane Spring day from 9am – 12pm (some events running till 1pm). Here’s a quick guide how to make sure you don’t miss any of the excitement before, during, or after the clean up!

Before the Clean up: 
Any volunteers who show up that are not registered but want to volunteer anyway, whether you come with friends, family or just heard about CFTC and showed up, Please find any project leader to provide you with a free T-Shirt for the event and a Volunteer Waiver From. If you are looking to connect with a specific project, try to identify which project you are searching for to the project leader you find and they will contact that specific project leader for coordination. With at least 13 different projects to choose from, the project leader you find can help you navigate all the fun!

 

During the Clean up:

Volunteer Projects Opportunities Include –

  • Public art (murals)
  • Planting raised garden beds and
  • Trash cleanup

Sign-up to Volunteer by going to www.VolunteerSpokane.org > click on Spokane Gives and then select the CFTC logo, or follow the unregistered volunteer instructions listed above.

Each volunteer will report to a project leader during the event who can answer any and all questions, distribute and refill supplies, and redistributing volunteers to other projects if your project finishes early or if others need the extra help.

Once your project is finished make sure you visit the Inland Northwest Blood Center Blood Drive from 11:00am – 1:00pm which will be located at 2310 N. Monroe next to the Emerson-Garfield Farmers Market.

 

After the Clean up:

After you grab lunch a delicious lunch, hit the photo booth, grab a drink, play some games, and visit the freshly pained murals, start your Corbin Park Historic District SCAVENGER HUNT which runs today through May 31st.
