Meet & Eat with Andy Billig & Others, Sep 24

Hillyard Neighborhood will be hosting a Meet & Eat with Andy Billig, Marcus Riccelli and Shelley Redinger on Tuesday, September 24. It will take place at Gateway Church (5201 N Market St) [map] and will run from 6 to 8pm.

A Meet & Eat is an informal event put on by Spokane’s neighborhood councils to give citizens an opportunity to sit down and chat with persons of note. In this case, you’ll get to hobnob with 3rd District officials Senator Andy Billig and Representative Marcus Riccelli plus Superintendent of Spokane Public Schools Shelley Redinger while dining on soup and homemade bread. It’s unlike the usual neighborhood council Q&A appearance in that this isn’t an orchestrated PR session — you’ll get the chance to talk to your elected decision-makers and appointed officials on a casual, one-on-one basis.

All are welcome, and it’s free to attend this event, which is hosted by the Hillyard Neighborhood Council as well as Gateway Church.

Guess what? There’s a massive sidewalk sale along N. Monroe today! It runs until 5pm.

The event might be taking place in lieu of the Ol’ Chicks and Picks Fair, which was supposed to be happening today. We don’t know. The flyer below only arrived in our inbox yesterday.

CornThe members of Emerson Community Garden will be hosting their annual Corn Feed Potluck tomorrow (Sunday, September 15) at Emerson Park [map] starting at 1:30pm.

The idea behind the event is to give everyone in the neighborhood a chance to share in this season’s bounty of the Emerson Community Garden.

All participants are asked to bring a dish, drink or dessert to share. There was a great turnout last year, and everyone involved is looking forward to mingling with neighbors and enjoying the garden’s delicious corn crop on what might be the last warm day of summer.

If you have questions, please contact Dave Musser or Paul Kimball. They are picking the corn right now (10am on Saturday), so if you’d like to lend a hand, head over to the community garden posthaste.

Materials for the Sept 11 EGNC Meeting

The Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meets tonight (Wednesday, September 11) for its first regular meeting since June. (There was no meeting in July, and August was an informal potluck.)

This meeting departs from the usual format in that it’s a city-wide town hall with Mayor Condon (or his emissary) on the 2014 budget, so the EGNC agenda is relatively brief on account of the shortened meeting. A few items we will be considering:

  • The city has proposed changes in neighborhood council mailings due to — surprise! — funding shifts and cutbacks. As things stand the EGNC will have to decide between a monthly print mailing of meeting materials to all voting members (which is our status quo) or a bi-annual postcard mailing to the entire neighborhood.
  • The EGNC needs additional volunteers to sustain its current momentum in terms of neighborhood events (like the Concerts in the Park and the farmers’ market), outreach (like social media and flyers), and Neighborhood Planning. If your involvement is minimal, infrequent, or nonexistent, it’s time to help lighten the load on those who’re doing more than their fair share to make Emerson-Garfield better for everyone. A list of suggested volunteer niches will be posted online soon.
  • Fall dump passes will be available in October. We’ll divulge when and where at tonight’s meeting.
  • Emerson-Garfield Steering Committee (i.e., the voting members of the neighborhood council) has just over $57k in Community Development Block Grant funds to allocate for 2014. The application and allocation process is similar to last year’s heavily altered process, but there have been some changes based on community feedback. Those will be addressed briefly.

Neighborhood Planning Meeting Tonight (Sept 5)

Just a quick reminder that there’s a Neighborhood Planning meeting tonight (September 5) starting at 7pm in the Corbin Senior Center.

At the top of the agenda is fine-tuning the format and content of the planning workshops that are now scheduled for October 10 and November 14. These will be neighborhood-wide events that will inform people across Emerson-Garfield about what Neighborhood Planning is and what it aims to accomplish. These workshops will also solicit input about where the neighborhood’s short- and long-term priorities lie. For example: Should we be working to make N. Monroe more pedestrian-friendly? Should we emphasize traffic calming across the neighborhood? Or should we work toward something ambitious, like establishing guidelines for landlords to make them more accountable for the state of their rental properties? These issues and their possible solutions are up to us — and you — to decide.
