WSDOT seeks public input for I-90 safety improvements along 15-mile stretch west of Spokane

Online survey offers opportunity to help identify potential safety improvements

People are invited to provide feedback on options to improve safety while considering conservation of basalt rock along a 15-mile stretch of Interstate 90, just west of Spokane in the Four Lakes and Tyler area. The Washington State Department of Transportation invites everyone who relies on this section of I-90, including residents, businesses, commuters and organizations that support the Spokane region, to participate in an online survey.

To improve safety, WSDOT plans to regrade the median along I-90 between mileposts 255 and 270. Ten segments have been identified where basalt rock and tree removal could affect views along the highway.

WSDOT is seeking input on two options to improve safety in these locations: installing barriers with guardrail or removing the rock and trees. Each option has an assigned cost, safety and environmental factor to take into consideration. Adding barrier requires additional funding. The Gathering House (733 West Garland Ave) presents, The Red Carpet Murder, a Murder Mystery Dinner for Valentine’s weekend. Join the fun for a memorable night out!

It’s Hollywood’s Golden Era and the stars walk the red carpet for the major movie premier of 1947. Guests will be immersed in the red carpet experience and watch the story unfold throughout the evening. It’s a comic takeoff on major film stars of the era and their rivalries. As in all murder mysteries, something goes wrong and a star ends up dead. 

Following the theme, those attending the are encouraged to dress up for their own red carpet experience. Photo opportunities will be available and prizes awarded for the best costumes from the era as well as solving the mystery.

The event sponsor, The Gathering House, strives to be, as its name suggests, a gathering place for the Spokane community. Many different types of events are presented that offer hope and meaning as well as plain old fun. It is hoped this theatrical event is the first of many theatre performances to take place at the Garland District venue.  

The Red Carpet Murder is a fundraiser to supply food and essentials for participants in Spokane’s Community Court. The Community Court was established in 2013 to more effectively help those struggling with addiction, homelessness and poverty by clearing up misdemeanor charges, holding them accountable through community service, and connecting them with agencies that can help.

Volunteer Opportunity – Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels

Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels provides meals across all of Spokane County. For nearly one-third of the participants, this is the only meal they will eat today.

They are experiencing an acute shortage of volunteers to help with meal delivery, especially in the Emerson/Garfield neighborhood.

Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels delivered almost 275,000 meals to homebound senior citizens in 2018. More than 300 volunteers deliver 22,000 meals each month to residents throughout all of 1,800 miles of Spokane County.

They are asking the Emerson/Garfield community for help in spreading the word about our services. Participants must be 60 years old or older and they pay only what they can afford – no one is refused because of a lack of ability to pay. They offer home delivery and also operate 12 congregate meal sites where seniors can enjoy a hot meal in comfort in the company of their peers.

The issue of senior hunger and isolation are complicated and immense and our agency cannot conquer it alone. Please join in the fight. If you have any questions, call Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels anytime and speak to an intake specialist or volunteer coordinator. 509-924-6976
