Photos Needed for 2014 Spokane Neighborhood Calendar

This is your last chance to submit photos for the 2014 Community Assembly Spokane Neighborhood Calendar!

The Office of Neighborhood Services is still looking for more photographs for next year’s calendar, but they need them submitted by Tuesday, October 1. This call is open to anyone who would like to submit a photo.

Requirements for Photos:

Photos must be neighborhood-centric (no iconic Spokane pictures such as Riverfront Park, Monroe St. Bridge, etc.). This calendar aims to represent the different neighborhoods that exist in the City of Spokane.
Photos must be 3300×2550 DPI and taken with a camera with no fewer than 8 megapixels.
The image may be digitally enhanced/created by the photographer.
Please no cellphone photos unless it is 8 megapixels or more.
Hard copy photos must be submitted at the size of 5×7 inch, no smaller.

If you are taking a photo of a specific person and would like a permission form, one can be provided to you. If you are taking a photo in a public place and people are in it, it is not necessary to get permission from the persons in the photo.

Digital photos can be e-mailed to jayc@spkn.net. For info on how and where to submit a hard copy photo, please send a request to the same e-mail address.

Neighborhood Training: Event Planning, Oct 7

The Office of Neighborhood Services will be holding the third event in its training series on ~~Monday, September 30~~ Monday, October 7 from 6-7pm at the Southside Senior Activity Center (3151 E 27th) [map].

This event will show how you can help build community in your neighborhood through event planning. Information will be presented on how to work with the City of Spokane and your neighborhood to create a great event. You’ll also learn about the costs and effects of such events and how to navigate the City’s Special Events permitting process.

Affordable Care Act Info Session, Oct 1

On Tuesday, October 1 Riverside Neighborhood Council will be hosting a representative of Community Minded Enterprises to take participants through the details of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) as well as Washington State’s Medical Care Exchange.

A state legislator will also be on hand to respond to questions regarding both of the programs.

The event will be help from 5-7pm in Room 1A of the Downtown Branch of the Spokane Public Library (906 W Main Ave) [map].

New E-G Farmers’ Market Tokens

The new tokens for the Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market just arrived!

The $1 and $5 tokens were generously sponsored by Washington Grown and Landie Chappell (of PrimeLending), respectively. We’re incredibly grateful for their support and are looking forward to putting the new tokens into circulation at tomorrow’s market.

If you have some tokens knocking about in your pocket already, don’t worry. You don’t have to exchange them (though you can if you want to!). Vendors will still gladly accept the old ones, even into next season.

And remember: These tokens (just like the old ones) are also valid at the West Central Marketplace, which takes place every Tuesday from 3-6pm at A.M. Cannon Park (right next to the West Central Community Center). We’re the few — if not the only — farmers’ markets in Spokane who have joint currency!

Meet & Eat with Andy Billig & Others, Sep 24

Hillyard Neighborhood will be hosting a Meet & Eat with Andy Billig, Marcus Riccelli and Shelley Redinger on Tuesday, September 24. It will take place at Gateway Church (5201 N Market St) [map] and will run from 6 to 8pm.

A Meet & Eat is an informal event put on by Spokane’s neighborhood councils to give citizens an opportunity to sit down and chat with persons of note. In this case, you’ll get to hobnob with 3rd District officials Senator Andy Billig and Representative Marcus Riccelli plus Superintendent of Spokane Public Schools Shelley Redinger while dining on soup and homemade bread. It’s unlike the usual neighborhood council Q&A appearance in that this isn’t an orchestrated PR session — you’ll get the chance to talk to your elected decision-makers and appointed officials on a casual, one-on-one basis.

All are welcome, and it’s free to attend this event, which is hosted by the Hillyard Neighborhood Council as well as Gateway Church.
