ENUFF Crime Awareness Event, Oct 22

Spokane COPS will be hosting an Every Neighborhood United for Families (ENUFF) crime awareness/prevention forum on Tuesday, October 22 at New Hope Christian Reform Church (3310 W Francis) [map] from 6-8pm.

This free event will address theft, vandalism and clutter in neighborhoods across Spokane and help connect individuals and organizations who are striving to increase safety in their community.

Experts will be on hand to talk about Block Watch, current crime trends and neighbor-to-neighbor connectedness. You’ll also hear how you can play a role in realizing the Spokane Police Department Strategic Plan 2013 (PDF link).

Guest speakers and panelists include leaders in the Spokane Police Department, Spokane Police NCO Doug Strosahl, COPS director Christy Hamilton, Neighborhood Services Director Heather Trautman, Block Watch representative Sue Hille and many more.

Meet Your Neighbors: CrossFit Dūrātus

After a year of planning, six months of preparation, and a month of work in the space, CrossFit Dūrātus (1303 N Washington) [map] opened its doors in August in the Emerson-Garfield neighborhood.

Already enjoying a loyal following of dedicated athletes and fitness enthusiasts, CrossFit Dūrātus is an inspiring and growing local business, founded by Kevin Longmeier.

“What I love most about CrossFit is that it is more than just fitness. It’s a community,” says Kevin.

And fortunately for Emerson-Garfield, Kevin cares a lot about community, including the neighborhood in which his business resides. CrossFit Dūrātus joins Landie Chappell (of PrimeLending) and Washington Grown in becoming the latest sponsor of our Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market, and Kevin even generously donated the grand prize for tonight’s end-of-season drawing… a free one-month membership to CrossFit Dūrātus.

Neighborhood Training: 501(c)3 Status, Oct 21

In conjunction with the Building Stronger Neighborhoods committee, Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council is hosting a Neighborhood “Hot Topic” Training session on Nonprofit Formation on Monday, October 21. It will take place at the Corbin Senior Center (827 W Cleveland) [map] and run from 6 to 7:30pm.

This session will be of interest to neighborhood councils — including our own — who are currently pursuing or thinking about pursuing nonprofit status. Participants will hear some of the benefits and potential pitfalls of 501(c)3 status from two tax and business lawyers skilled in nonprofit formation.

Due to the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council’s historic debates over nonprofit status and the feeling that an unbiased expert opinion was necessary to make an informed decision, we specifically requested that the Corbin Senior Center serve as the site of this training session. Anyone who has or has had a stake in the EGNC becoming a nonprofit (or avoiding such a move) is therefore encouraged to attend.

District 3 Candidate Forum Tomorrow (Oct 17)

The Northwest Neighborhood Association will be hosting a candidate forum on Thursday, October 17 in the cafeteria of Browne Elementary School (5102 N Driscoll Blvd) [map] at 7pm where they will have a moderated discussion and questions with city council candidates Michael Cannon and Candace Mumm who are up for election to replace city council woman Nancy McLaughlin, who is termed out and cannot run for her position any longer.

Victor Frazier and Steve Corker will be the moderators and will take and field questions from the audience in attendance on 3 x 5 cards. All of District 3 is invited to attend this forum, meet the candidates and ask questions. The formal part of this forum will last approximately 30 minutes, and the meeting will be over by about 8pm.

Dump passes will be issued at the end of the October meeting after the forum. Any left over from Thursday night will be issued at the Shadle COPS shop on Saturday, October 19. Verification of address to show that you live in the Northwest neighborhood will be required to receive a dump pass.

The organizers hope to see people from all over District 3 at this forum, given that the ballots will be arriving right about the time that they are hosting this.

October Neighborhood Planning Workshop Recap

On behalf of the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Planning committee, we’d like to give a big shout out to everyone who participated in last night’s important workshop!

We had a very spirited crowd of about 50 neighbors and a few business owners, who came together to contribute their unique perspective to creating the vision for our neighborhood and what issues need our attention to attain that vision! It was an incredibly valuable and inspiring evening, and we hope even more neighbors will plan on participating in the follow-up workshop on Thursday, November 14.

We left the night with a healthy amount of data reflecting areas of the neighborhood in need of attention, and a strong voice to what our priorities should be as we move ahead with planning.

Beautification of North Monroe was a common theme, as was better support for alternative modes of transportation (including bus shelters and bike routes), incentives for desirable businesses to occupy currently vacant buildings, more neighborhood events and improved methods of crime prevention (such as better lighting, more organized Neighborhood Watch, and awareness training).

In collaboration with our planning firm, AHBL, and the City of Spokane, your planning committee will be hard at work organizing this data and preparing for our next workshop, which will focus on brainstorming and prioritizing solutions to the issues that were identified last night.
