Trinity Catholic School Cow Plop (June 4); New Facility Proposed

Trinity Catholic School (1306 W Montgomery) is holding its 26th annual Cow Plop fundraiser on Saturday, June 4 from 11am to 4pm.

Typically Trinity closes off a one-block portion of Cedar for this popular family-friendly event and brings in carnival-style games and activities. This year they’ll have a balloon-twisting clown, a bouncy house, games, arts and crafts, and lots more. Pizza Rita and a petting zoo will be there too.

They’ll also have over 50 cash prizes, including $3,100 in prize money for the winner of the bovine bingo. To buy bingo tickets or request more information, call (509) 327-9369. All proceeds benefit the students at Trinity.

Trinity also has some exciting news to share this year. This is from the school’s principal, Sandra Nokes:

There is a couple who is going to honor the gift of childhood and the mission of Trinity School. Funds have been designated to construct a brand new Trinity, and building plans are in the development process. The city has NOT given us FINAL APPROVAL, however, we are hopeful that they will support this monumental gift and continue to work with us to make it happen. We believe that Trinity has been and will continue to be a “beacon of hope” in the community, and for all we serve. Remember, Trinity works with families to make tuition affordable and we serve a diverse population, both non-Catholic and Catholic. A new Trinity with Educare enables us to continue to serve children and families into the future.

The school will be soliciting input and approval from community partners including the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council once the plans reach the appropriate stage.

Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Training Programs

The Fulcrum Institute‘s Ash Street Workforce Training Station (1925 N Ash) here in Emerson-Garfield is offering another valuable series of construction pre-apprenticeship training programs in partnership with the Associated General Contractors.

This program is ideal for anyone who is considering a career in the construction industry and wants an opportunity for a head start. The registration fee is just $25.

The course topics include:

Career guide to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, welding, heavy equipment, ironwork, residential
OSHA 10 certification
Hand and power tools
First aid/CPR with AED certification
Construction math
Intro to signaling and rigging
Material handling and forklift certification
Work concepts
Communication skills
Hands-on practice

The two upcoming sessions will run from:

July 11 to 28, 8am to 4pm, Monday through Thursday
August 1 to 18, 8am to 4pm, Monday through Thursday

COHBC Community Garage Sale (June 4)

Christ Our Hope Bible Church (1620 N Monroe) is holding its annual community garage sale on Saturday, June 4. The event will run from 9am to 12pm in the church’s parking lot. In the past there have been a whole range of goods, including clothes, household items, electronics, books and media, and plenty more.

Anyone in the community can participate in the event and sell their own items. The cost is free, and COHBC will provide the tables. You’ll also keep the money for whatever you sell.

Setup can begin at 8am. You’ll be responsible for setting up your items, pricing your items, taking money for your items, and removing any unsold items. All unsold items must be removed by 1pm. COHBC asks that participants remain at their table the entire time.

The church will take care of all advertising for the event along with any signage to direct people to the sale.

Spring Cleanup Tomorrow (May 21)

A quick reminder that our neighborhood’s eighth annual Spring Cleanup is tomorrow (Saturday, May 21). The event is held in the lot adjacent to Faith Bible Church (600 W Cora Ave) and runs from 9am to 12:30pm.

You’ll need some form of ID to show you live within the Emerson-Garfield boundaries.

At the moment it looks like some scattered showers are forecast for tomorrow. The volunteer crew will be there no matter what, so make it worth their while and don’t let a little rain stop you from cleaning out the clutter from your yard, attic, basement, garage or storage room – all for free and without having to truck it over to the solid waste facility.

What can you offload? Here are some categories:

Clean green: Bagged grass clippings, leaves, pine needles, etc. Branches must be less than 3″ in diameter and under 6′ in length. No sod, rock, gravel or animal feces.
Refuse: Everyday junk. No food items, drywall, concrete or nail-embedded wood. All items must be in small, manageable pieces. No large furniture or mattresses.
Recycling: Any mostly metal item, such as empty water heaters, stoves, washers/dryers, lawnmowers (drained of oil) or microwaves.
Salvation Army: Donations of clothing and furniture. You can also e-cycle your old computers, TVs and electronic gear.

If you’d like to put Spring Cleanup in your Facebook calendar, you can RSVP to the event there.

And remember, this year the neighborhood council is organizing a separate curbside large furniture pickup for items such as sofas, easy chairs and mattresses. You can register for that tomorrow at Spring Cleanup or by calling Karl at (509) 325-3031. Pickup will take place around the third week of June. You must preregister by Saturday, June 11.

Seeking Citizens to Help Define North Monroe Corridor Project

In an important announcement, the City of Spokane is seeking property and business owners, area residents, and representatives from the Emerson-Garfield, North Hill, West Central, and Riverside neighborhoods to serve on the advisory board that will work with City staff to inform the public and stakeholders about the project and its elements and to help make choices about the final scope of work. Much of the work will be concentrated over the next year. monroe-future-rendering

Applications are being accepted through Wednesday, June 1, following a Council action that created the advisory board on May 16. Send the completed application to the Mayor’s Office by mail at 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., Spokane, WA 99201 or by emailing them directly to bcote@spokanecity.org. Members will be appointed by the Council.
