Paint in My Hair (Re)Opening, Aug 9

When one door closes, another often opens.

It was only a few weeks ago that we were lamenting the departure of Area 58. The good news is that another Monroe Street business, Paint in My Hair, has already moved into Area 58’s vacated space and will be hosting a grand (re)opening on Thursday, August 9 starting at 10:30am.

The boutique left its old digs at 2810 N. Monroe on July 28 (almost one year to the day after moving in) and is now located at 3036 N. Monroe [map]. (A post that describes how the owner transformed that earlier space can be found here.)

As part of Paint in My Hair’s Grand (Re)Opening festivities, they will be raffling away three great prizes:

  • A DeWalt drill set
  • A $100 Paint in My Hair gift certificate
  • 10 Paint in My Hair tote bags to the first ten customers, each filled with goodies

In addition to the giveaways, the event will also feature Chalk Paint demos and new items for sale.

2012 Emerson-Garfield Picnic & Potluck, Aug 8

Lucky residents in Emerson-Garfield have already begun receiving their flyers for this year’s Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Picnic & Potluck, which will be held Wednesday, August 8 from 6 to 8pm in Emerson Park [map].

The picnic/potluck is being organized by members of the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council — an all-volunteer organization that’s dedicated to bringing improvements to the neighborhood and ensuring a better quality of life for residents and business owners alike.

This event will be a great chance to meet your neighbors from all over Emerson-Garfield neighborhood and to hear from EGNC members on things like:

  • Upcoming events
  • Crime reports
  • Initiatives by the City of Spokane
  • Neighborhood planning
  • Park improvements

Everyone who lives or does business in Emerson-Garfield is welcome to attend. Invite your closest neighbors! Invite members of your charity or congregation! Invite the postman! Invite the cashiers at Zips on NW Blvd and Pizza Rita on Indiana or the baristas at Caffe Delicio!

There will be free hot dogs and soda, but all participants are kindly asked to please bring a dish (seriously, folks, please bring a dish!) to ensure that we’ve got enough food and enough variety. It could be a bowl of your homemade potato salad, a bag of tortilla chips and a jar of salsa, or some fruit from a local grocer.

Costs for all the supplies are coming out of our own pockets, so if you’re feeling generous, here’s what else we could use:

  • Extra utensils
  • Extra cups
  • Additional hot dogs or burgers (and buns)
  • Juice

Monroe St. Pub Crawl July 28

The fifth annual Monroe Street Pub Crawl will be held this Saturday, July 28, starting at 5pm.

This pub crawl is organized by Great Shape! Inc., a nonprofit that facilitates health care and education projects in Jamaica. The pub crawl is one of its two annual fundraisers
that help send volunteers to Jamaica to provide families with eye care, dental care, and literacy programs.

The event will start at Scout [map] at 1001 W. 1st Ave (i.e., corner of Monroe and 1st) at 5pm and continue north on Monroe as the evening progresses. There are ten bars/taverns/pubs on the itinerary, including (* denotes an Emerson-Garfield business):

Christ Our Hope Neighborhood Garage Sale July 28

Christ Our Hope Bible Church [map] will be holding a neighborhood garage sale this Saturday, July 28, from 9am to 1pm. It will take place in the church’s parking lot at 1620 N. Monroe.

It’s free to shop, of course, and even better — it’s free for vendors.

COHBC will take care of all promotional activity and set up tables in the church parking lot. Members of the community can sign up to sell their own items at one of those tables.

Setup will begin at 8am, and tables must be cleared of goods by 2pm. Participants ought to remain at their assigned table for the duration of the event, since COHBC won’t assume any responsibility for pricing, minding, or selling participants’ goods.

Project Joy Orchestra Needs a Percussionist

Project Joy is an organization of volunteer 50+ entertainers who bring music into care/retirement homes, schools, assisted-living facilities, and more. It’s also one of Emerson-Garfield neighborhood’s nonprofit beneficiaries. Last year our neighborhood allotted them $1,000 out of our Community Development Block Grant funds.

Project Joy has a volunteer orchestra called, fittingly, the Project Joy Orchestra. As with any volunteer organization, their success relies on the right people stepping forward at the right time to donate their time and energy.

At the moment the PJO is in need of a percussionist (and they could always use a few other instrumentalists too). The following call for volunteer musicians has gone out:

Ever just wanted to hit something?

We are a group of retired folks, students, and fun-loving amateur musicians who enjoy weekly gatherings and making music. As it turns out, we are down to one percussionist. Anyone who has musical experience, reads music, and enjoys being around those who are so inclined, are welcome.

Our normal rehearsal times are 9:30am to 11:45am every Tuesday morning, and concert times are usually Thursday afternoons. Now would be a great time to become a part of the orchestra so we can plan our fall schedule. Come sit in on a rehearsal and perhaps even come to one of our concerts with an eye toward joining one of the finest and most fun volunteer musical organizations in the region.

There is always room for another string player, selected winds, and a cheerleader or two in addition to percussionists. Sometimes it is fun to come with a friend. Better yet, what would happen if you offered to carpool with them?

We actually have a party (with goodies) at every rehearsal! Everyone loves a party! And it doesn’t cost anything to join.
