Roughly one dozen volunteers turned out today for the tree-planting event on N. Maple street. Representatives from the Office of Neighborhood Services and Spokane Urban Forestry were there to lend a hand, and Nancy MacKerrow of The Susie Forest attended with cookies and “treegrams” to allow the planters’ wishes to flourish along with the trees. Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council held its inaugural Concert in the Park on Sunday, July 28. The band Island Soul performed a fantastic, groove-filled set with plenty of new, updated, and classic tunes, and Smokin’ Rome’s was on hand serving up his delicious BBQ and soul food. The first-ever Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market yesterday was a promising launch event. The foot traffic was fairly steady throughout the afternoon despite the 95° heat. And perhaps just as importantly, patrons were overwhelmingly enthusiastic that a market was now in our area. More than just a place to buy fresh-baked bread, delicious local produce, or mouth-watering food truck fare, it brought together people who live, work, or just pass through Emerson-Garfield and gave them a chance to slow down and socialize….
