October Neighborhood Planning Workshop Recap

October Neighborhood Planning Workshop Recap

On behalf of the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Planning committee, we’d like to give a big shout out to everyone who participated in last night’s important workshop!

WORKSHOP_PANO

We had a very spirited crowd of about 50 neighbors and a few business owners, who came together to contribute their unique perspective to creating the vision for our neighborhood and what issues need our attention to attain that vision! It was an incredibly valuable and inspiring evening, and we hope even more neighbors will plan on participating in the follow-up workshop on ThursdayNovember 14.

Our youngest planner
Our youngest planner in action!

We left the night with a healthy amount of data reflecting areas of the neighborhood in need of attention, and a strong voice to what our priorities should be as we move ahead with planning.

Beautification of North Monroe was a common theme, as was better support for alternative modes of transportation (including bus shelters and bike routes), incentives for desirable businesses to occupy currently vacant buildings, more neighborhood events and improved methods of crime prevention (such as better lighting, more organized Neighborhood Watch, and awareness training).

In collaboration with our planning firm, AHBL, and the City of Spokane, your planning committee will be hard at work organizing this data and preparing for our next workshop, which will focus on brainstorming and prioritizing solutions to the issues that were identified last night.

Please, plan on joining us and help us create a plan that is as representative of your voice and the voice of our neighborhood as possible!

Corn Feed Potluck, Sept 15

Corn Feed Potluck, Sept 15

CornThe members of Emerson Community Garden will be hosting their annual Corn Feed Potluck tomorrow (Sunday, September 15) at Emerson Park [map] starting at 1:30pm.

The idea behind the event is to give everyone in the neighborhood a chance to share in this season’s bounty of the Emerson Community Garden.

All participants are asked to bring a dish, drink or dessert to share. There was a great turnout last year, and everyone involved is looking forward to mingling with neighbors and enjoying the garden’s delicious corn crop on what might be the last warm day of summer.

If you have questions, please contact Dave Musser or Paul Kimball. They are picking the corn right now (10am on Saturday), so if you’d like to lend a hand, head over to the community garden posthaste.

Jay Cousins snapped some photos of the annual neighborhood picnic and potluck that took place on Wednesday, August 14. There was a great turnout — so great, in fact, that the free hot dogs and burgers ran out before we could blink.

An informal Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Council meeting took place following the food. Some of the highlights of that included:

  • As a result of our requests, two traffic circles (aka roundabouts) are being installed on W Montgomery between Monroe and Maple. The city is actively soliciting feedback from residents as to what that completed project will look like. For instance: Will the circles be landscaped? Will there be additional curb bump-outs? We encourage you to get in touch to offer your input.
  • The neighborhood council will be allocating more than $57,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds this autumn. This money will go to sidewalks, home rehabilitation, capital projects, and more.
  • The Neighborhood Planning group is on a roll and will be meeting frequently in anticipation of the neighborhood-wide workshops on October 10 and November 14.
  • The Emerson-Garfield Farmers’ Market is going strong, and people are encouraged to stop by as well as spread the word to ensure its continued success.
  • The first-ever Concert in the Park was a huge success. There is already $300 in the pot for next year’s more ambitious series.
  • Candace Mumm gave a brief talk about her District 3 candidacy and made herself available for questions about neighborhood councils, planning, and more.
  • Mayor David Condon will be hosting a city-wide budget presentation and Q&A at our September 11 neighborhood council meeting. As such, the “business” portion of the meeting will be abbreviated, and we’re to expect a turnout far beyond regular neighborhood council members.
