Night Out Against Crime, Aug 7

Night Out Against Crime, Aug 7

On TuesdayAugust 7 (remember: that’s the evening before the Emerson-Garfield Neighborhood Picnic & Potluck) there will be a special fundraiser hosted by Pizza Rita on Indiana on behalf of the annual nationwide Night Out Against Crime. The event starts at 6pm and runs until 8pm at Corbin Park [map].

Pizza Rita will be selling slices of pizza and ice-cold pop for just 50¢. All proceeds from the pizza sales will benefit COPS North Central.

A number of items will be for sale at the event through a silent auction. As with the pizza money, all auction money goes to our local COPS Shop. There will also be Live Music (Zach Hval and The Liverwurst Lads ) and Visual Vortex fire dancers.

Please remember that this is a cash only event — that goes for the auction as well as the pizza. Although there are some tables at the park, bring your own folding chairs and  picnic blankets (not to mention your appetite!). Parking is limited, too, so plan to walk or bike a few blocks instead of driving.

Questions? Contact Pizza Rita through their Facebook page or call Brian at 953-1486.

To mark the Night Out Against Crime you can also meet at your Block Watch captain’s home. But we have a feeling that cheap pizza in the park will be just a tiny bit more fun.

Paint in My Hair (Re)Opening, Aug 9

Paint in My Hair (Re)Opening, Aug 9

When one door closes, another often opens.

It was only a few weeks ago that we were lamenting the departure of Area 58. The good news is that another Monroe Street business, Paint in My Hair, has already moved into Area 58’s vacated space and will be hosting a grand (re)opening on Thursday, August 9 starting at 10:30am.

Jessica, the owner of Paint in My Hair, closing her old shop, July 28, 2012.

The boutique left its old digs at 2810 N. Monroe on July 28 (almost one year to the day after moving in) and is now located at 3036 N. Monroe [map]. (A post that describes how the owner transformed that earlier space can be found here.)

As part of Paint in My Hair’s Grand (Re)Opening festivities, they will be raffling away three great prizes:

  • A DeWalt drill set
  • A $100 Paint in My Hair gift certificate
  • 10 Paint in My Hair tote bags to the first ten customers, each filled with goodies

In addition to the giveaways, the event will also feature Chalk Paint demos and new items for sale.

Monroe St. Pub Crawl July 28

Monroe St. Pub Crawl July 28

The fifth annual Monroe Street Pub Crawl will be held this Saturday, July 28, starting at 5pm.

This pub crawl is organized by Great Shape! Inc., a nonprofit that facilitates health care and education projects in Jamaica. The pub crawl is one of its two annual fundraisers
that help send volunteers to Jamaica to provide families with eye care, dental care, and literacy programs.

The event will start at Scout [map] at 1001 W. 1st Ave (i.e., corner of Monroe and 1st) at 5pm and continue north on Monroe as the evening progresses. There are ten bars/taverns/pubs on the itinerary, including (* denotes an Emerson-Garfield business):

Registration is $25. Sign up by filling out the online registration form, or get in touch with Hannah Phalen for more info.

Area 58 Closing

Area 58 Closing

We’re saddened to share the news that Area 58 [map], one of Spokane’s most colorful secondhand and vintage stores, is closing.

As part of their pre-closure inventory liquidation, everything is 50% off. Their impressive selection of secondhand books is priced at $1 per hardback and 50¢ per paperback.

Their last day of operation is this Saturday, June 30.

In a brief conversation with the owner, the reason for the closure comes down to flatlining (as opposed to falling) profits over the past three years. She said that more competing secondhand shops have opened on account of the poor economy, and the improvements in parking and pedestrian traffic that N. Monroe Revitalization might have brought are still some years off.

But the case of Area 58 highlights how vital it is to our neighborhood economy that the revitalization be carried out in an intelligent, holistic way — not one that just benefits vehicles. Faster-flowing traffic would not have helped Area 58 or any of the dozen other N. Monroe business that have closed in the past year. More pleasant and convenient pedestrian access would have.

It also highlights how important it is that N. Monroe business owners band together and engage in cross-promotional activities like sales and special events. Organizations like the North Monroe Business Association are eager to get things like that off the ground, but the level of participation seems to suggest that N. Monroe business owners would rather close their doors than collaborate.

Tossed & Found Barn Sale Today

Tossed & Found Barn Sale Today

Tossed and Found is holding its second annual Barn Sale today (sorry for the short notice) from 9am to 5pm. They’ve even repainted the barn in honor of the event!

In addition to their inventory of antiques, they’ll be hosting guest vendors such as Fringe & Fray (Facebook) who will have their own antiques, second-hand items, and handmade crafts.

Tossed and Found is located at 2607 N. Monroe Street, and there should be plenty of parking along Monroe as well as the neighboring residential streets like York and Chelan. Questions? Call Tossed and Found on (509) 325-2607.
